Knit a sweater with knitting needles in short rows. How to knit in short rows. Technique for performing short rows

Climax

The coral raglan pullover has a rounded hem and an asymmetrical, voluminous collar. Knitted with “French elastic” on knitting needles, from the series of works “My French knitting”. Textured, unusually soft and warm.

Welcome to my knitting blog! Showing off my new work. This is an oversized pullover made from rich coral-colored yarn.

Reference

Oversize - too big, too big. For some time now, products that seem to have been worn from someone else’s shoulder have become fashionable. These include hats and outerwear. The beauty of this model is its versatility. Since products of this style are suitable for almost everyone, thin and plump, young and older people.

I started knitting back in July, with long breaks due to the unbearable heat. Finally, it’s getting cooler, it’s time to put on such warm clothes. I finished knitting and present it to your attention. True, I had to think about how to correctly call such a model of a knitted product: a sweater, pullover or jumper.

After all, as you know, a high collar is typical for sweaters. But usually the collars on sweaters are solid, without slits. The jumper has a low round or square collar.

I decided that the most accurate definition would be “pullover” (or “pool” for short). Since pullovers are distinguished by V-shaped collars. I stopped there.

Difficulty level: for experienced knitters (for advanced level of knitting).

Description of the pullover

ABOUT MATERIALS

I knitted a pool for size 46-48. The yarn of the desired color was carefully selected. It must be said that not all yarn manufacturers offer such a beautiful coral shade of thread.

We found it in our Russian yarn Pekhorka Perspektivnaya (Winter series), 270 m/100 g. The pullover weighs 530 grams, i.e. it took a little more than 5 skeins.

My regular readers know that with such a pattern, i.e. I’ve been knitting with “French rib” (abbreviated as FR) a lot lately. For example, I showed a women's cardigan. Look, the article contains links to other posts with models related to FR.

The pullover was knitted using size 4 knitting needles. Please note that my product is knitted softly, on the shoulders the pattern even shows through a little. Precisely because I selected the knitting needles approximately one size larger than required for a thread of this thickness.

But, if you like dense things, so that the fabric holds its shape well, stretching a little when put on, take a look at my case description of the beanie hat (complete with a snood scarf and mittens). The set is just very tight, the hat stands straight up when you put it on. The effect is completely different, due to the fact that the ratio of knitting needles and yarn is different.

The pullover is completely knitted with French rib. She showed me how to knit French rib in a step-by-step master class. There is nothing complicated in the pattern, only knit and purl loops are used, even yarn overs are not needed.

Of course, I use such techniques in my work as knitting fr. with an elastic band in a circle, increasing and decreasing. At first glance, it may seem that all this is done in an elementary way. In fact, skills come as you knit different patterns.

Knitting Pula

The pullover is knitted from bottom to top. To obtain the now fashionable rounded bottom, I first went through shortened rows.

Undercuts are loops that are left open or closed in the underarm area. This is done so that the product does not tighten in this place and “sits” freely.

When knitting raglan from top to bottom, these loops are selected specially. For an example, look at how to crochet a delicate baby dress. It showed this moment in detail.

In this way I knitted the back and front, i.e. each detail separately. I took it off with additional knitting needles and put them aside.

Then the sleeves were tied. I made additions on the sleeves to widen the fabric as I approached the armpit area. Finished with undercuts 4 cm wide.

After which, I transferred the loops of all the parts onto one circular knitting needle. Continued knitting in the round.

You can see how this stage looks in action in the descriptions about a men's jumper and a women's cardigan, the link to which was given above. This time I knitted in the same way, so during the knitting process I didn’t particularly try to capture everything.

First, of course, I carefully calculated how to knit the raglan bevels. I must say, this is the most important stage when knitting such a pattern. Because the final result depends on the calculations. Will the sleeves be the right length or will they be short/long? Will it sting in the armpits, etc.?

I knitted the top part of the pullover, making decreases using purl stitches for raglan.

Reached the neck. I used a trick that helps knit narrow areas with knitting needles with a long fishing line.

What kind of “secret” technique this is and how to use it, I showed in a separate article here. I think many people encounter this problem when there are no knitting needles with short line. But I don’t want to switch to stocking needles. In this case, this method is very helpful.

As already mentioned, I finished this pullover at the neck with exactly this technique. Then I knitted a dozen rows on the back for a “sprout” almost 5 cm high.

Sprout - several rows on the back, which we knit with a height of 3 to 5 cm. These rows lengthen the product from the back, so it does not pull back or tighten. In general, it “sits” freely and comfortably.

A stylish and fashionable pullover with a rounded hem and an asymmetrical stand-up collar was ready. Washed and steamed.

This DESCRIPTION is the author's development of Saule Vagapova. It is prohibited to copy, reprint, sell or distribute it for free (including in the format of video lessons). Consists of two elements: stanzas and pauses.

Stanzas- these are areas of work connected by shortened rows. The stanzas are made using garter stitch with stanza yarn.

Pauses- these are rows that run along the entire work, visually separating stanzas from one another. Pauses are made in stockinette stitch with pause yarn.

Stanzas
There are two “types” of stanzas: light and dark stanzas. Both types are performed in the same way. The basis of the stanza is a shortened row with a certain length of melody. Melody length - the number of loops specified in the description.
A stanza consists of bars. Each measure is a double row = dv. R. (that is, it consists of two rows), in which the shortened row is shifted by a certain number of loops. The rhythm of the melody indicates which measure should be connected.
To indicate a turn in a shortened row, safety pins are used: light pins on the front side of the work, dark ones on the back side.

Each pin indicates that this row is shortened and does not need to be knitted until the end of the work. Each time the work is rotated, the corresponding pin is either removed before the rotation or installed after the rotation. The first loop after turning is always knitted with a double loop (double stitch). A double loop is always counted and knitted as one loop. When swing knitting, the edge loop is always knitted like the rest of the row: in rows knitted with knit stitches - knit, in rows knitted with purl loops - purl. The first and last five stitches of the row form the edge zone. Pins are not placed in this area.

Light stanza

The light stanza moves from the right side of the entire knitting to the left side, and light pins are used to mark it. On the front side of the work it goes “up”, on the back side of the work it goes “down”.
Knit a row up to the 1st light pin, before turning the work, remove the pin, turn the work, or after turning the work, install a dark pin, then in purl. R. lay out the length of the melody, rotate the work, install a light pin.
Then sequentially link the measures specified by the rhythm of the melody. For example, the rhythm of the melody 1, 2, 3, 4 with a melody length of 20 stitches means: first knit a row to the starting position or to the 1st light pin, remove the light pin or install a dark pin after turning. In purl. R. knit a melody 20 stitches long. Turn the work, install a light pin.
Note:When swing knitting, persons are considered. and out. rows of stanzas, not faces. and out. rows of all the work!

1st measure:persons R. "1 and. up": knit the loops of the previous row to the two. p. inclusive + 1 more p., here either a light pin is installed that needs to be removed, or a dark pin must be installed after turning the work. Turn the work around. Dv. p. at the beginning of the row. Out. R. “1 p. down” do not knit 1 p. to the end of the previous row, in this case it is double. p. of the previous row. Rotate the work and install a light pin.

2nd measure:persons R. "2. p. up”: knit the loops of the previous row to the d. p. inclusive + 2 more p., remove the light pin and turn the work or turn the work and install a dark pin.
Out. R. “2 sts down”: do not knit 2 sts to the end of the previous row, in this case it is the last double stitch. p. + 1 previous loop. Rotate the work and install a light pin,

3rd measure:persons R. “3 p. up”: knit the loops of the previous row to the two. p. inclusive + 3 more p., remove the light pin and turn the work or turn the work and install a dark pin. Out. R. “3 p. down”; do not knit 3 stitches to the end of the previous row, in this case it is the last double stitch. p. + 2 previous loops. Rotate the work and install a light pin.

4th measure:persons R. “4 p. up”: knit the loops of the previous row to the two. p. inclusive + 4 more p., remove the light pin and turn the work or turn the work and install a dark pin. Out. R. “4 sts down”: do not knit 4 sts to the end of the previous row, in this case it is the last double stitch. p. + 3 previous loops. Rotate the work and install a light pin.

Completion:knit all the loops towards the left edge, and then knit purl. a number of persons. loops towards the right edge.

The light stanza is of the following types:
. opening stanza
. opening stanzaalong the left edge, the location of which is indicated only by light pins;
. ordinary stanza , which is shifted by the length of the melody and marked with light pins;
. edge strafa, which is performed over light pins near the right edge.

Dark stanza

The dark stanza moves from the left side of the entire knitting to the right side and dark pins are used to mark it. It goes “up” along the back side of the work, and “down” along the front side of the work.
First knit a row towards the left edge, then purlwise. R. knit to the 1st volume pin, before turning
remove the pin from the work, turn the work, or after turning the work, install a light pin, then in purl. R. lay out the length of the melody, rotate the work, install a dark pin. Then sequentially link the measures specified by the rhythm of the melody.

For example, the melody rhythm is 1,2,3,4 with a melody length of 20 points means:First knit a row towards the left edge, purlwise. R. knit to the starting position or to the 1st dark pin, lengthen the dark pin or install a light pin after turning. In purl. R. knit a melody 20 stitches long. Turn the work, install a dark pin.

1st measure:persons R. “1 p. up”: knit the loops of the previous row to the two. p. inclusive + 1 more p., here either a dark pin is installed that needs to be removed, or a light pin needs to be installed after turning the work. Turn the work around. Dv. p. at the beginning of the row. Out. R. “1 p. down”: do not knit 1 p. to the end of the previous row, in this case it is double. p. of the previous row. Rotate the work and install a dark pin.

2nd measure:persons R. “2 p. up”: knit the loops of the previous row to the two. p. inclusive + 2 more p., remove the dark pin and turn the work or turn the work and install a light pin. Out. R. “2 p. down”: do not knit 2 p. to the end of the previous row, in this case it is the last dv. p. +1 previous loop. Rotate the work and install a dark pin.

3rd measure:persons R. “3 sts up”: knit the letli of the previous row to the dv. p. inclusive + 3 more p., remove the dark pin and turn the work or turn the work and install a light pin. Out. R. “3 p. down”: do not knit 3 p. to the end of the previous row, in this case it is the last double stitch. p. + 2 previous loops. Rotate the work and install a dark pin.

4th measure:persons R. “4 p. up”: knit the loops of the previous row to the two. p. inclusive + 4 more p., remove the dark pin and turn the work or turn the work and install a light pin. Out. R. “4 p. down”; do not knit 4 stitches to the end of the previous row, in this case it is the last double stitch. p. + 3 previous loops. Rotate the work and install a dark pin.

Completion:knit purl a number of persons. loops towards the right edge.

The dark stanza is of the following types:
. opening stanza, the location of which is determined by light and dark pins;
. initial stanza on the left, the location of which is indicated only by light pins;
. ordinary stanza , which is shifted by the length of the melody and marked with dark pins;
. edge stanza, which is performed over the dark pins near the left edge.

Knitting density

Elastic band A, slightly stretching in width: 18 sts and 24 r. = 10 x 10 cm

Elastic B, slightly stretching in width: 16 sts and 24 r. = 10 x 10 cm

Short rows: see the black arrows on the pattern, as well as the table on the technique of making shortened rows.

From right to left: knit 5 stitches, turn, perform 1 double loop and knit back; then in each person. R. knit 4 stitches more until all the loops are included in the work = 30 r. from the right edge and 2 p. from the left edge.

From left to right: knit 57 p., turn, perform 1 double loop and knit back; then in each person. R. knit 4 stitches less until only 5 stitches remain in the work = 30 r. from the right edge and 2 p. from the left edge.

Description of work

Back and front: knit in one piece across, starting from the left sleeve. Cast on 62 sts and knit with rib A. 1st r. start with chrome, 1 person. and 2 p. and end symmetrically. For sleeve/shoulder bevels, mark the middle 2 knits. p. and on both sides of them add 3 p. 1 x 1 p., then in every 2nd p. 27 x 1 p.; To do this, knit alternately 2x1 knits. cross. and 2 x 1 p. cross. from a transverse thread = 118 p. After 28 (30) 32 cm from the cast-on edge, begin to cut the neckline. To do this, knit 57 stitches and set them aside, close 4 stitches. On the trail. 57 p. Continue knitting before closing from the right edge to cut the neckline in every 2nd r. 8 x 1 p. For this, in persons. R. knit chrome. and 1 p. knit., 1 p. remove as knit., 1 knit. and stretch it through the removed st. = 49 sts.

Knit 26 r. straight, then every 2nd r. add 8 x 1 p.; chrome for this purpose. and knit 2 sts, then alternately knit 2 x 1 knits. cross. and 2 x 1 p. cross. from cross thread = 57 p. After the next. purl R. put the loops aside = 52 (54) 56 sts. On the postponed sts, knit 58 r. backrests Now knit again on all the loops, in the 1st person. R. again cast on 4 stitches between the pieces = 118 stitches. After 56 (60) 64 cm from the cast-on edge, that is, having knitted another 10 (14) 20 stitches, mark the middle 2 knits for the sleeve/shoulder bevels. p. and knit the 1st marked loop with the previous loop together knit., remove the 2nd marked loop as knit., 1 knit. and stretch it through the removed st. Repeat such decreases in every 2nd p. 27 more times. Next persons R. close the loops according to the pattern = 80 (84) 88 cm from the cast-on edge.

Pullover Bottom: knit across, see gray rounded arrows on the pattern. Cast on 62 sts and knit with rib B. 1st purl. R. start with chrome, 4 p. and end symmetrically. Next persons R. knit in short rows from right to left. Then * knit 2 r. on all loops and perform 28 shortened rows from right to left, repeat from * 1 more time. In 34 (40) 46 r. knit on all stitches, then perform short rows from left to right. Knit 22 (30) 38 rubles on all stitches. (= middle back), then knit in short rows from right to left. Knit 34 (40) 46 rows on all loops, then perform shortened rows from left to right. * Knit 2 p. on all stitches, then perform 28 shortened rows from left to right, repeat from * 2 more times, bind off all stitches straight.

Assembly: make the bottom seams of the sleeves with a width of 20 cm. Sew the bottom part of the pullover, see the pattern and photo of the model: first sew the cast-on edge from * to * to the bottom edge of the front and the closed edge from * to * behind the cast-on edge, adding a width of up to 28 cm Then sew the other edge of the bottom of the pullover to the rest of the front and back edges. Sew buttons onto the bottom of the pullover, see photo, while grabbing the top and bottom parts.

Technique for performing short rows:

Full or partial use of the material is PROHIBITED.
It is allowed to use only a photo of the model with an active link to the article.

Often in knitting patterns there is a description when it is necessary for one side of the knitted product to be longer than the other. Then they resort to knitting shortened rows, that is, rows not knitted to the end. To make the row shortened, the work is turned before the end of the row, and turning, knit again the same loops that you just knitted. As a result, there are many more rows on one side of the canvas than on the other. This technique is also called partial or rotary knitting. At the proposed master class you will be able to study this technique in detail.

Partial knitting method or shortened rows

Figure 1 shows a pattern for knitting a dart, when shortened rows are knitted on one side; such rows are made for darts on women's blouses, on the back of children's trousers, when knitting berets and flared skirts. Figure 2 shows a pattern of shortened rows on both sides of knitting. Such rows are knitted to obtain convex parts of the product, for example, to give a characteristic shape to the heels on the toes. Here, in each shortened row, one less loop is knitted and then, in order to “turn the heel,” one more loop is knitted in each row until the original net loops are cast on.

When, when turning the work, all the loops are knitted on top of each other, holes are formed between the loops. They can be left as part of the pattern if the pattern is openwork, or hidden by using the knitting method described below with entwined loops.

How to make short rows in the front row and hide the holes:

1.Knit facial threads to the turning point. Without knitting, slip the next stitch onto the right needle, as in knitting, and bring the thread forward to the right side of the work between the knitting needles (Fig. 3).

2. Move the removed loop back to the left knitting needle, and move the thread back and keep it at work, as in knitting. Turn the work as if you had knitted to the end of the row. The removed loop will be entwined and there will be a long constriction around it (Fig. 4). Then knit with purl stitches.

When you knit the knit stitches above the turn and the constriction stitch on the next row, you must knit the knit stitch together with the constriction stitch. This will be done in more detail as follows: knit the fabric up to the entwined loop, then pass the right knitting needle under the constriction along with the loop (Fig. 5) and knit them together.

How to make short rows on a purl row and hide the holes:

1. Knit the purl loops to the point of turning without knitting, then slip the next loop onto the right needle, as in purl knitting, and move the thread forward to the front side of the work between the knitting needles (Fig. 6).

2. Transfer the removed loop back to the left knitting needle, and move the thread back and hold it behind the work, as in knitting, then turn the work, as if you had knitted to the end of the row. The removed loop will be entwined and there will be a long constriction around it (Fig. 7). Next knit with purl stitches.

When you purl the stitches over the turn and overstitch on the next row, you insert the right needle behind the back wall of the loop formed by the yarn and move it onto the left needle. Next we purl the loop together with the constriction.

Such shortened rows can also be used for “horizontal arrows” (Fig. 9), shoulder or other bevels (Fig. 10) and when connecting parts of different densities (Fig. 11).

"Horizontal Arrows"(Fig. 9)

This is a convenient opportunity to use the ability to knit short rows to give the details of clothing a more fitted or simply original shape. To do this, you need to knit from the edge of the fabric, i.e. from the side seam to the tip of the “arrow”. Then turn and knit to the third or fourth loop (depending on the angle) from the edge of the fabric. Knit in this way and in each front row, each time knitting 3-4 loops further from the side seam, until you get an “arrow” of the required depth. Next, knit along all the loops.

Shoulder bevels (Fig. 10)

Also formed using shortened rows. If you close all the loops several times, without knitting to one of the edges, the edge of the fabric on the shoulder section will turn out to be stepped. To prevent this from happening, you can turn the work in front of the loops that need to be closed for the shoulder bevel, and repeat this procedure in each row in which the loops are closed. As a result, all the loops will form a bevel and end up on the knitting needle; now they can be closed in one step.

Connect parts(Fig.11)

Knitting patterns with rows of different densities will help to shorten the rows. For example. you can easily connect a garter stitch sown with the front of a cardigan knitted in stockinette stitch. You will need to knit six rows of garter stitch for every four rows of stockinette stitch. Having completed the row at the end of the garter stitch, you need to turn and knit with garter stitch, then turn again and knit the garter stitches with knit stitches, turn again and knit them in the reverse row as well. After this, continue knitting on all loops of the product.

Master class on knitting in short rows:

In order to master the techniques of under-tying ( knitting in short rows), cast on 30 stitches on the knitting needles and knit several rows in stockinette stitch (stocking stitch). Starting from the front side, knit 25 loops for the first time, leaving 5 loops on the left knitting needle (not knitted enough). Then the 5th loop, counting from left to right, is removed onto the right knitting needle, leaving the working thread in front of this loop, passing the working thread between the ends of the right and left knitting needles from front to back and returning the 5th loop to the left knitting needle, wrapping it around it. Turn the knitting over to the wrong side and knit the row to the end.

Wrapping a knit stitch when knitting in short and long rows

In subsequent rows along the front side, the 10th, 15th, 20th and 25th loops are wrapped in the same way with the working thread, counting from left to right. When all the loops located on the left knitting needle are unknitted, you need to knit a common front row. When knitting loops that have been entwined, the end of the right knitting needle is directed from the bottom up under the entwining thread and into the loop, grab the working thread and knit the main loop together with the entwining thread with a knit stitch. After knitting the common front row, the wrapping threads remain on the wrong side and are invisible from the front side.

Knitting the main loop together with the wrapping thread in the front loop

When knitting short rows on the wrong side, the purl loops are wrapped around the working thread in the same way. as well as facial ones. When knitting a common purl row, the thread that wraps around the loops is grabbed with the end of the right knitting needle from the front side, put on the left knitting needle and knitted together with the main purl loop.

Knitting the main loop together with the wrapping thread with a purl loop

Knitting in extended rows is explained in the following example. For the sample, cast on 25 stitches on knitting needles and knit several rows in stockinette stitch. Starting from the front side, the first time a smaller number of loops are knitted, for example 4 loops, and the 5th is wrapped in the same way as was described in the case of knitting in short rows. Turn the knitting to the wrong side and knit the loops purlwise (there will be 4 loops). Then 9 loops are knitted along the front side and wrapped around the 10th, while the 5th loop, which was twisted with the working thread in the previous row, is knitted together with the wrapping thread. After wrapping the 10th loop, turn the knitting to the wrong side and knit the row to the end. All subsequent front rows are knitted in the same way, increasing each by 5 loops. Knitting in extended rows on the wrong side is done in the same way as on the front side, lifting the wrapping thread in the same way as when knitting in short rows.
