I present to you an option for making a fake chest.

I needed it for the autumn holiday. At first I just wanted to order from a furniture store, but when I found out about the price (5,000 rubles), I decided to make it myself. My box cost 10 times cheaper.

If you want to make the same, then you will be required:

2 identical carton boxes;

1 can of PVA glue (If large chest - 2 jars) ;

Unnecessary newspapers or magazines;

Wallpaper or self-adhesive for decorating the external and internal surfaces;

2 window hinges;

3 furniture handles;

Screws with nuts for fastening hinges and handles;

A small piece of thin plastic (to reinforce the areas where the handles and

1. Prepare box: cut off the top covers, glue all seams, creases and other irregularities with several layers of paper (of necessity).

2. From another one the same boxes cut out the blank for the lid. We also glue the bumps and corners with paper. (number of layers - as needed).

3. Cover surface chest made from newspaper sheets (we glue many layers to make it cardboard) and glue it to the glued blank.

4. Now prepared box, and cover the lid with newspapers in several layers.

The more layers you make, the stronger your box.

The chest is ready.

Which product size to choose

A DIY New Year's chest can be made as a souvenir, for example, in the form of a keychain or magnet, or directly in the form of a functional item intended for packaging or storing gifts from Santa Claus. In such a chest, the size of a regular gift box, you can easily pack sweets and small toys and place them under the Christmas tree at home for your baby. If you need an interior decoration option for a festive event in a kindergarten, school or other organization, you will have to work hard and make a product the size of a box.

Tools and materials

To make cardboard chests with your own hands, you will need the following:

  • cardboard;
  • sample;
  • (pencil, ruler, eraser, square, compass);
  • scissors or knife (depending on the size of the object being made);
  • glue or thread with an awl for connecting elements;
  • decor (textured paper, fabric, braid, lace, sequins, beads, beads, etc.).

As you can see, everything you need for work can be found at home!

How to make a magic chest with your own hands using a template

If you have a finished product, for example, packaging for a sweet gift, you can use it as a blank.

To do this, unstick the seams and lay out the cardboard chest to a flat piece. Place the stencil on the cardboard and trace along the outline. If you need to make a smaller or larger chest with your own hands, just change the size of your diagram proportionally. Another way is to find a template on the Internet, print it to the desired scale and also trace it along the outline.

Whichever template option you choose, the steps for creating the chest itself will be as follows:

  1. So, in front of you is a contour blank, which you transferred to cardboard for the chest in any way. Cut it out with a knife or scissors.
  2. Draw along the fold lines with a sharp but not cutting object, for example, a knitting needle or a non-writing ballpoint pen, or make small indentations or cuts in the form of a dotted line. This step will allow you to carefully bend the thick cardboard without creasing the material.
  3. Fold the flat pattern into a three-dimensional structure and glue all the seams.
  4. The next stage will be decoration. By the way, some elements should be attached before assembly, for example, fabric if you are going to cover the chest with it.

How to draw a sweep yourself

If you decide to make a chest with your own hands, but there is no template, you can create it entirely yourself. In essence, the object is a rectangular box with a hinged lid, the end parts of which are made in the form of semicircles. To do this, you will need to draw a bottom rectangle of the required size on cardboard, and another rectangle on each side that will form the walls of the product. Don't forget to allow for gluing allowances. If it’s difficult for you to completely imagine a chest in the form of a flat diagram, take a regular box and unfold it. Use this as a reference for the bottom of the piece.

How to make a lid

If you decide to make Santa Claus's chest with your own hands, drawing a pattern yourself, you will have to work a little on the lid of the product.

For the first time, you can create it in the form of a separate part that is glued to the box base. Work like this:

  1. Draw two halves of a circle with a diameter that matches the width of the lid (or base box).
  2. Draw circles of larger diameter around the workpieces. These will be the gluing allowances.
  3. Cut out the resulting two semicircles and make cuts along the allowances and bend them.
  4. Draw a rectangle with a width equal to the long side of the base box. The length will be determined somewhat more difficult: you need to measure the perimeter of the arc of the resulting semicircle (without allowances) and add to them the distance for gluing to the base (back) and the allowance for the front part so that the lid overlaps.
  5. Draw another rectangle equal to the size of the bottom. Don't forget about the gluing allowances too.
  6. Cut out all prepared parts.
  7. Glue the elements into a three-dimensional structure and attach to the base.

How to make a chest with your own hands without glue

If you don’t understand at all how to assemble a three-dimensional box from a flat diagram, where to make allowances, and there is no ready-made template, you can use this method of work, where glue is only needed to decorate the product.

Work like this:

  1. Draw two identical rectangles for the base of the box and the lid.
  2. Make two identical parts of the side parts of the base (chest walls).
  3. Make two semicircles for the lid, as well as a large rectangle to make an arcuate surface. Determine the dimensions yourself depending on what kind of chest you are making.
  4. Cut out all the blanks. Decorate them with fabric, paint or designer paper at this stage.
  5. Make holes along those sides of the parts that will be connected to adjacent ones using an awl or a large needle at a distance of a few millimeters from the edge so that the workpiece does not tear (the distance from the edge depends on the thickness of the cardboard). Adjacent parts should have the same number of holes at equal distances.
  6. Take threads that match the color of the future chest or contrasting ones and use a crochet hook or needle to connect the parts of the product. The same can be done even with the help of a narrow satin ribbon, only the holes will need to be made of a larger diameter.

In this way, even those who find it difficult to understand the construction of box drawings can make a Santa Claus chest with their own hands. The only drawback of this method is that it will take a lot of time to make holes around the perimeter of the workpieces and sew them together or tie them with threads.

Product decoration

So, you have seen that you can make cardboard chests with your own hands in different ways, and if a non-decorative base material is used, it can be easily covered with fabric or beautiful paper. If the product is glued together, then decoration can be done both before this stage and at the end of the work.

If you make a New Year's chest with your own hands by sewing together elements, you need to cover it with fabric first in order to pierce holes in all layers at once. In addition to fabric and paper, the following decoration methods are suitable:

  • glue a sequin pattern around the perimeter of the sides;
  • lay out a pattern of beads in the form of frosty monograms;
  • use decoupage technique instead of covering with fabric;
  • apply voluminous decorations from satin ribbons, quilling elements, artificial snow, appliques in the form of snowflakes and other thematic objects.

As you can see, you can make a New Year's chest with your own hands in different ways. Choose your favorite design and decor option. Create spectacular accessories for the holiday!

The most magical holiday is approaching - New Year. There is a huge selection of gift sets in stores, but it is always nicer to receive a gift made by yourself. I propose to make a magical three-dimensional chest with a surprise. We make the chest from a cylindrical tube. You can take a cognac package.

Materials and tools

cardboard cylindrical tube 1 piece
stationery knife, scissors 1 piece
paper A 4 2 sheets
colored paper 2 sheets
ribbon 50cm
blue wallpaper 20*30 cm
decorative ornaments 2 pieces
PVA glue 1 tube
gouache kit
tassel 2 pieces
cotton wool 2 gr.
foam rubber 20 gr.
beads 40 cm
candies 200 gr.
rain 1 piece

We cover the outer (with wallpaper) and inner (blue colored paper) parts of the chest. From white paper we cut out a winter forest and a team of reindeer carrying Santa Claus. We color everything with gouache. Glue to the edges of the chest. We decorate the bottom of the craft with cotton wool and put candies. Candy is one gift for your child, but that's not all! Hidden behind one of the deer is a scroll tied with a silver ribbon. It contains detailed instructions on where to look for a gift from Santa Claus. The chest can be hung on the Christmas tree using ribbon attached to the sides.

Step-by-step photo instructions

Take the tube and use a utility knife to cut it vertically from edge to edge.

We make horizontal cuts of 15 cm.

Take wallpaper and paste the outside of the tube

We cover the inside of the tube with blue paper and draw snowflakes on it.

Cut out Christmas trees from green colored paper. Cut out 6 small Christmas trees (4 cm in height) and 3 large ones (7 cm in height). We glue the triangular Christmas trees.

Glue the Christmas trees.

Take a white sheet of paper and cut out trees in the winter forest.

We tint the tree crowns. Finely cut the foam rubber and decorate the tops.

We hang beads on the Christmas trees. We glue the trees to the top and bottom edges of our chest. At the bottom of the tube we glue cotton wool, arrange the candies and a rolled up paper roll (scroll). It contains detailed instructions on where to look for a gift from Santa Claus.

Take a white sheet of paper. We cut out Santa Claus in a sleigh with reindeer. We decorate with gouache. Cut it out.

The eldest wanted to make a chest, but decided to lime all the colored cardboard! Then I couldn’t stand it and offered him my help! I keep boxes just for such occasions.

Let's start with cutting:

I glued all the parts together with regular PVA using newspaper strips. I cut the cardboard on the lid a little to make it round.

The size of the lid depends on the semicircular side, I cut off the excess.

I prepared boards for decorating the gift - I cut out strips 2 cm wide from cardboard.

I painted the chest and stripes with white acrylic paint. Then, using paint and a sponge, I gave the stripes the appearance of wood. Everything is quite simple - I used dark paint using a sponge to make strokes along the entire length, in some places I applied more, in others I applied less paint. It moved strictly vertically. And I didn’t forget about the edges, they also need to be painted over.

Well, while everything was drying, I prepared the decor. I wove a net from threads using the macrame technique, painted it with black paint, and dried it in a stretched position. I prepared shells and coins (I had some legos lying around).

The chest was covered with dark paint and left to dry.

The next step is to glue the boards using Moment Woodworker glue.

The board strips need to be cutalong in half. This was especially useful when gluing it to the lid, because if they were wide, I would not be able to create a semicircle shape .

Here's what happened:

Next, I cut out triangles from cardboard, painted them and glued them to the corners of the chest.

And I attached the hinges for the padlock with glue, and then screwed in screws for decoration.

I remembered that I had spray paint (like bronze or something), and applied a little to the corners and hinges. It looks like it has a rust effect, right?

Made a pirate tag out of cardboard! I glued on the net (I had to tinker) and coins. I didn't like the shells...

I covered the entire chest with wood varnish.

There was no padlock to be found, and my son couldn’t bear it anymore, so he had to use natural material! I inserted a pirate tag.

DIY gift - Chest, ready! All that's left is to buy the lock!

On the eve of the New Year, I want to tell you how you can make various models yourself chests for your treasures.

Combines the simplest models chests a cardboard base from which the frame is glued, then either covered with newsprint, or thick drawing paper, or crumpled paper. If you have it in stock, you can cover your finished one. box pieces of suede, leather or leatherette (but it doesn’t stick well and immediately curls up). Then, at your request, either all this is painted with acrylic paints, or covered with fabric, or decorated using the decoupage technique, you can add decorative elements from papier-mâché and fur. What I like most, of course, is the leather version, painted on top with acrylic and covered with gems :)

There are several options for making the base:

    Can be cut out box according to the corrugated cardboard scheme - its advantage is that it bends well, but its disadvantages are that it is easily dented.

    You can use a printer paper box with a lid (usually the box contains 5 packs of paper, 500 A4 sheets each) or purchase a Russian Post parcel box of the required size.

    You can glue from hard cardboard, thin sheets of fiberboard or decorative plywood, but for this you will already need a jigsaw.

    You can make the base - the edges of the chest from hard wire and trim it, paste it over, tie it, string it with beads and seed beads, etc.

Design examples chests different techniques:

Decoupage

Corrugated paper

Covering with fabric and fur

Leather

Design options for your chest a great variety - the main thing is to make a strong frame and you can create magic chest, which will delight and delight not only household members but also guests. And especially relevant chest under a Christmas tree with a bright New Year's theme and there is always enough room for imagination. Create and delight yourself and your friends with handmade gifts. And even when moving from one place to another, and this unfortunately happens to me often, it can be used to pack furniture for Barbie and Ken, creating coziness inside :)
