It’s probably difficult to find a person who doesn’t have a couple of old jeans lying around in their closet. And it’s a shame to throw it away, and I don’t want to wear it anymore. An excellent option in the “how to make new out of old” style is to sew a denim handbag.

It’s not for nothing that jeans have not gone out of fashion for several decades. In addition to the fact that denim items look very stylish, they also have excellent wear resistance and comfort. A women's denim handbag is an almost universal accessory. Depending on the cut and finishing, it can be worn with sportswear, romantic summer dresses and even office outfits. And for teenagers and young people, this is generally a real find. Bright decor, funny inscriptions and applications will attract attention in any situation.

Many girls think that it is almost impossible to create such a fashionable item on their own. Not true! A little patience, a little imagination, a pair of unnecessary jeans - and a new accessory is in your hands. And the detailed master classes from our article will help you cope with every stage of the process without any problems.

Stylish denim bag. Sew according to the pattern

This handbag is distinguished by its simplicity of execution and original design. It will be easy to make even for a novice needlewoman. For this:

  • transfer the pattern onto paper with the indicated dimensions. However, the size can be made to any size. But if this is your first thing, then it's best to stick to the exact guidelines throughout the process;

  • Pay special attention to the darts. You should not refuse them, otherwise the bag will turn out flat;
  • after the bag pattern is ready, you can move on to working with the fabric;
  • cut off one leg of the jeans and open one of the side seams on it. Repeat the same steps for the second pant leg. We ended up with 2 canvases for the front and back of the bag;
  • using chalk, transfer the pattern to the fabric and cut out the parts, leaving 10 mm allowances on each side;
  • Place both pieces with right sides facing each other and machine stitch the sides and bottom;
  • connect the edges of the darts, secure their position with sewing pins and sew strictly along the line;
  • Next, we proceed to decorating the denim bag. We cut off the pockets and sew them on the way we like. You can make pockets on the sides, you can sew both on one side, or even overlap each other. Experiment and choose the option that seems most harmonious;
  • we sew a beautiful frill. We cut a strip of any beautiful fabric measuring 0.7 * 1.2 m. Fold it in half along the long side and sew it on a machine or by hand, making folds at the same time;
  • we cut off the belt and yoke from the jeans, and sew our ruffle to the detail. Sew to the wrong side of the belt so that the frill protrudes about 30 mm;
  • We connect the two parts and the bag is almost ready. All that remains is to make the handles;
  • we intertwine strips of denim and a second material, as shown in the figure. We fix each “knot” with thread;
  • sew the handles to the bag and...
  • Let's go pick out an outfit for a new accessory!

    It's hard to find a house that doesn't have a couple of old denim items lying around. Often they simply take up space, because it’s a shame to throw them away and you can’t put them on. An excellent opportunity to extend the life of such items would be a DIY denim bag made from them, which can take pride of place in your collection of accessories.

    What to do if it’s hard to part with your favorite jeans?

    Denim items have long been at the peak of popularity, due to the wear resistance and comfort of the material. Everyone remembers their first trousers or skirt, which were very practical and comfortable. But over time, for various reasons, any thing becomes unnecessary and wastes space in the closet, awaiting its sad fate, from which your skill and imagination can save it.

    A great option that will breathe new life into your old things is a DIY denim bag. It will be a great addition to various clothes. Moreover, you will have an original handbag, which no one else will have analogues.

    DIY denim bag: patterns

    With old denim items on hand, you can start designing a new handbag, the size and style of which will depend on your personal preferences. You can make very simple bags from denim with your own hands, for which it is not necessary to create patterns. For example, you can simply cut off the top of the trousers, sew the bottom and attach handles to the resulting bag and - voila - the new accessory is ready. If desired, you can decorate it with various ribbons, chains or other decorations to make the look more attractive.

    If you are not a fan of the easy way, then when sewing a denim bag with your own hands, you need to use patterns. You can build them yourself or find the most suitable options in magazines or books on needlework. A lot of useful information can be found on special sites, of which there are quite a few on the Internet.

    Simple denim bag

    Every woman has a whole arsenal of handbags, but sometimes you want to get a brand new accessory. After all, even when going out shopping, the fairer sex tries to look attractive. An excellent option would be a hand-sewn denim bag, with which you can go to work, to the shops or for a walk.

    First you need to prepare the material. You can use fabric taken from several denim trousers at once and sewn into a single piece. Then you need to make a pattern, taking into account the size of the future product. Transfer the pattern to the prepared fabric and cut it out. To make the bag look beautiful inside, you need to sew a lining from some not very thick material, which we cut according to the same pattern and sew the side seams. Now let's start making the handles. To sew them, you need to cut out two rectangles, 6 cm wide and 25 cm long. Fold the rectangles right side inward, stitch along the edge and turn them inside out. You can optionally attach straps to the bag to which you can attach a harness.

    We wrap the edges of the top of the bag and the lining and, having secured the handles and straps, sew them. Your first product is ready and you can sew new bags with your own hands from denim. Don’t forget that they can be additionally decorated with rhinestones, buttons, ribbons or other similar materials, which will make them original.

    Luxurious denim bag

    A hand-sewn light denim bag can be an excellent accessory. The patterns for it are very simple, which even a novice needlewoman can make. To get started, you need to find the appropriate material. You can sew a denim bag with your own hands from fabric of other colors, but the light version will still be more festive. The main thing is to carefully tailor the product, which will ensure its beauty.

    Constructing a pattern

    The future bag consists of a minimum number of parts, so creating a pattern will not be difficult. You will need two large rectangles - the back and front of the bag, a small rectangle that will be the bottom of the bag. You also need a strip to finish the top of the product, but you can use a trouser belt for this purpose.

    You also need to cut out strips, from which you will then need to make a handle and harness for the future accessory. It is better to select their sizes yourself, which will ensure maximum convenience for a hand-sewn bag made from denim.

    Collecting a denim bag

    The next step in making the accessory is preparing the material. You need to rip off the waistband of the trousers and undo the side seams. We apply the patterns to the resulting parts of the front and back of the trousers, outline them, not forgetting about the allowances, and cut out the parts. Outline and cut out the bottom of the bag.

    We take any lining material and prepare the parts in the same way, after which we can start sewing the product. First, we connect the front and back of the bag on the sides, after which we attach the bottom part. We prepare the inside in the same way. To make the bottom of the bag more durable, you can reinforce it with plastic or cardboard.

    We combine the top of the outer part of the bag and the lining and sew it with a belt. The handle and harness can be sewn on or you can use special fasteners that can be found on old bags or bought in a store.

    To make the product look stunning, it can be decorated with sequins, stones, rhinestones or rivets.

    DIY small denim bag

    A great option for repurposing old denim items is a small handbag. It can be an excellent accessory for both adult ladies and very young representatives of the fair sex. If you decorate it with various stones or rivets, then you will have a very original item that will be an excellent addition to your look.

    Sewing a bag is not particularly difficult, which allows even a novice seamstress to make this lovely accessory. You need to make a pattern, transfer it to the material and cut out the parts. After sewing all the parts together, you need to attach a harness to the resulting craft and you will have a denim bag ready. Sewing such products with your own hands is quite entertaining. Moreover, you can save significant amounts of money by repurposing old items. After all, such things are not very cheap.

    Do you have old jeans that you can’t bear to throw away, but for some reason you can’t wear them anymore? Then you definitely need to learn how to make a useful and original accessory out of them. The bag we offer from old jeans (master class in the article with a step-by-step description) will complement your wardrobe. It turns out to be interesting and, most importantly, completely unique.

    What will we sew from?

    Of everything! Everything you have in the house can come in handy. Let's start with the fact that jeans can be absolutely anything. If they have a lot of pockets, then that’s great, you can use them. Old shirts for lining, lace scraps, pieces of leather, beads, fringe, studs, etc. - all this will help you create an original item. In general, denim bags made from old jeans can be completely different, and not only in color.

    Firstly, the product can be one-piece or, like a patchwork quilt, sewn from many pieces of denim of different colors.

    Secondly, size. You can sew whatever your heart desires: from a small clutch to a spacious beach bag. For example, like the one in the first photo. Agree, it’s hard to understand that they were once jeans, and the lining material with a floral print adds special charm and functionality. This bag can be worn in two ways.

    To summarize, we can say that first you need to choose a model, the size of the accessory, and only then proceed to selecting the material (from what is available) and cutting it.

    The lightest bag made from old jeans

    The option is incredibly simple to implement. All you need is two pairs of jeans, preferably in dark and light contrasting colors, thread and a sewing machine. Pants legs will be used. Cut strips of the same length and width from two types of material. The edges can be processed with a figured overlock or a small fringe 5 mm long can be made. Then connect them together in the style of wickerwork as shown in the figure. Next, connect the edges and sew on a machine; you can use any thread, for example, traditional reddish-brown or white threads for denim. Cut a piece of fabric for the bottom to the size you need and sew on the bottom. Fold the strips at the top - where the bag will open - inwards and carefully hem them. The next stage is the handle. A bag made from old jeans of this type can have a long strap or short handles. Depending on your wishes, take two strips of denim and stitch them on each side in two places.

    Denim bucket bag

    Another option on how to make a new thing with your own hands quickly and at no extra cost. For this you will need old jeans and decorative twisted rope. Jeans need to be cut the way we are used to doing in order to get summer shorts from them. Leave the length of the legs about 5-8 cm. Then open all the seams to the level of the fly. Cut out the bottom from the cut trouser legs. It can be round, approximately 15-20 cm in diameter, or rectangular - it all depends on what size your jeans are. The upper part of the future accessory must be carefully sewn to the bottom. And now the bag from old jeans is ready. There is no need to process the top, as it remains intact. Thread a rope through the holes for the belt and tighten slightly.

    Leg clutch

    With just one outdated pair of jeans, you can turn the legs into several bags. At the same time, there is not much work, and even a non-professional with basic knowledge of cutting and sewing can handle it. Additionally, to make this model you will need a long thin leather strap of any color. Try making a bag from old jeans. The pattern is elementary! Depending on how tall you need the clutch when folded, adjust the height of the trouser leg trim. Pay attention to the photo: on average, you need to cut along the knee line. Then turn the piece of fabric inside out and stitch along the bottom. We return to the front side. Start sewing the strap (the part with the buckle) from the front 10 cm above the bottom and bring it to the back, and then forward, i.e. you need to go around the clutch. Make holes in it using an awl. Additionally, such a bag can be decorated with whatever you like: metal rivets, appliqués made of fabric or leather, lace or fringe, which has been extremely popular lately. Modest in appearance, it is quite spacious in volume.

    The next bag made from old jeans with your own hands (a pattern is basically not needed here, and how to cut the material is shown in the photo) is more complicated in terms of making, but not so difficult as to deny yourself the pleasure of making it. The advantage of this option is that the top part of the item remains intact, and you can easily use it as shorts.

    What will you need?

    First of all, you need old jeans, or rather their trouser legs - the part that is 20-25 cm above the knee. For the lining, prepare a small piece of thick cotton fabric of any color, in this case black, but you can take something more cheerful, for example with a floral print. As a rule, such trimmings remain after dresses, blouses, etc. Of course, you need a sewing machine and thread, as well as a large button and decorative cord. Sewing bags from old jeans only seems like a difficult task; in fact, it all depends on what you want to achieve in the end and how complex the model you initially choose. It makes sense to look at the one we offer below and start with it as an experiment.

    Cutting the material

    From the legs of the jeans we cut two identical pieces approximately 20-25 cm high, as shown in the figure. Then, using a blade, carefully rip them apart from the inside. Now place both halves in front of you so that the remaining seams on them form one line. And sew them together. Cut out a fabric of a suitable size from thick cotton fabric. Depending on how long the handles are needed, cut out a edging from the remains of the trouser legs (it consists of two identical parts).

    In general, sewing a bag from old jeans (the pattern for one of the options is given in the article a little higher) is quite simple, the main thing is to be patient.

    Progress

    Sew a piece of lining material around the perimeter of the bag to the base. For the handle, sew two parts of the edging together and connect them with a smooth stitch on a machine into a circle. The main canvas of the bag is shaped like a rectangle. Using the dimensions of the smaller side, cut out 4 more equal parts from the leftovers, identical in width to the future handle. Sew them together to make identical strips and stitch them to the bag. Then carefully - first by hand, and then by machine - secure the handle.

    A bag made from old jeans can have a zipper, but this will require a little more skill; we suggest sewing a large button or button to its front part, and a cord to the back to close the accessory with it.

    Envelope from pockets for a child

    Jeans are such a universal thing that even after using them for their intended purpose, you can make many more interesting crafts. Everything that we presented above is mostly for adults and teenagers, but we ignored kids. But such an item will be very useful for little fashionistas. Our proposal is a DIY mini bag made from old jeans; you don’t even need a pattern for it. All that is required are pockets. Children, as a rule, enjoy using such “things”. This pocket can easily fit a couple of candies, a cute pebble or seeds for the birds.

    It’s good if there are a lot of them on jeans and they are voluminous and overlaid. Just carefully cut it out with an allowance of 5-6 cm on top for the “lid”, as shown in the picture. Make a slot in it for a button and thread it. Well, then it all depends on your imagination: you can sew various ribbons, leather laces and beads, butterflies and flowers for girls, boats and airplanes for boys.

    We hope that now you will not have a question about how to sew a bag from old jeans and turn a boring old thing into something really necessary, original and original.

    Many patchwork lovers keep old jeans in their “bins” in the hope of someday sewing something from them. And there are those who use old jeans as a source material for their patchwork creativity.

    Like any housewife with a large family (son, daughter, grandson, husband, sister, in-law, brother and a bunch of other relatives), my house has a huge amount of denim clothes that have already “outlived their usefulness.” But “jeans” are a fairly durable and high-quality material, I couldn’t bear to throw it away. So the idea came to sew bags and backpacks from these things. And what? They will no longer shed or shrink. And denim is always in fashion.
    Do you have old jeans? Let's give them a new life together!

    I suggest you sew a bag with a flap decorated with a monkey's paw patchwork block. For such a bag we will need scraps from two jeans in contrasting colors, scissors, thread and needles, a zipper, lining fabric, paper, tracing paper, non-woven fabric, and a ruler. And of course, a good mood!

    We make a pattern from paper: the base of the bag and the flap.

    Let's start with the valve. We put tracing paper on the paper valve pattern and draw this template. Since we are using contrasting fabrics, this should be noted (shaded).

    The basic sewing technique is familiar to many. We measure the inner squares, take into account the seam allowance, cut out two strips, from which we sew a two-color square.

    We secure it in the center of the base with pins, aligning the lines of the central stitches with the central lines in the drawing (do not forget about matching the colors).

    Next, measure one of the triangles following the central square, add it to the seams and cut out a triangle from the fabric of the desired color.

    We pin, stitch, turn, iron, straighten. And so, sequentially, the remaining triangles.

    The first row is ready. We do the same with all the other rows, don’t forget about the colors. We make sure to iron every detail.

    The result is such beauty.

    Remove the paper (it comes off easily).

    We attach the patchwork set to an adhesive base (non-woven fabric, dublerin), make a decorative stitch and adjust it according to the valve pattern. Sew on the piping (optional), cut out the denim lining and sew it face to face to the patchwork flap piece.

    Turn it inside out, iron it, stitch along the edge. The valve is ready.

    Let's start with the base of the bag. We take a pattern and cut 4 parts from denim and 4 parts from lining fabric. You can make a pocket on one of the jeans parts (this will be the back).

    We immediately prepare the handle for our handbag (120 cm) and the strap on which the buckle will be held (11 cm). The width of both the straps and the handles for me is 2 cm in finished form, yours may be different - it depends on the width of the buckle.

    We sew the handle and strap into denim inserts (6x6 cm squares, folded in half).

    I use buckles, rivets, eyelets and other metal parts. Their installation requires special tools, but this can be done in a special workshop.
    Now we collect the “carcass” of the bag. Take two denim pieces (those without pockets) and place them facing each other. We transfer the line of the inner seam from the pattern and sew it together.

    Next, we take the back part (I have a pocket on it), measure 3 cm from the top, draw a line, attach the finished flap to it and attach it, departing 0.3 cm from the edge of the flap.

    Turn it over to the face and add a decorative stitch, leaving a margin of 0.5 cm.

    We pin the crossbars on which the handle is attached, at a distance of 3 cm from the top of the “back” of the bag.

    We attach the “back” to the lower panel of the central part and sew them together. To prevent the top panel from accidentally getting under the needle, we turn its edges under and pin it with pins.

    Turn it inside out, making cuts in the corners - half of the bag is ready.

    Now we pin the edges of the finished (back) half, place the front of the bag face down and stitch it in the same way as the back (don’t forget about the inserts!). We cut the corners and turn them inside out. The “carcass” is ready.

    Let's move on to the lining. We put the two cut pieces face to face and sew them around the perimeter. We do the same with the other two parts. This makes two bags. We turn the entrance to the bag 1 cm, baste it and put it aside for a while.

    Take the zipper, apply it to the entrance of the bag, add 5-6 cm, cut it off.

    At the entrance to the bag, on both sides of the side seams, measure 1.5 cm to the center and make a mark.

    We pin (or baste) the zipper, carefully tucking its beginning.

    Sew from the edge 0.7 cm to the mark at the end of the zipper. We repeat the operation on the other side.
    Carefully fold inward by 0.7-0.8 cm the edges of both sections of the bag, including those to which the zipper is sewn, and baste.

    Now we take the previously sewn bags from the lining, put them (without turning them inside out) into each section of the bag, baste them to the jeans and make a stitch along the face of each section.

    We put a slider and a stopper tail made of denim on the zipper.

    Install the eyelets on the strap.

    And the bag is ready!
    A few words about decor and accessories. If you do not have the opportunity (or desire) to install rivets, eyelets and other attributes of the “denim” style, you can completely do without them. And the patchwork pattern on the valve can be anything. To confirm this, there is another handbag using the same pattern and sewing technology, which, it seems to me, looks no worse than the “heroine” of this master class.
