Test and review: Michael Kors Access Grayson - smart watch from a fashion brand. How to distinguish original Michael Kors watches from fakes: instructions How to set up a Michael Kors watch

Mammalogy

First of all, you should prepare the necessary tools, these are:

  • a gypsy needle or awl sharpened on the edge;
  • pliers with a thin nose or tweezers.
Before you start removing excess bracelet links, you should carefully calculate their number. At the same time, it is recommended not to remove all the parts from one side of the strap - it will be more harmonious and convenient for subsequent wear to remove the links on both sides in the same amount.

Sequencing:

  1. To make disassembling the bracelet easier, it is recommended to unfasten the clasp - carefully inspect it from all sides. There should be small holes on it, by pressing on which (using a needle or awl), you will unfasten the bracelet ring;
  2. Next, you should begin to remove the necessary links. This process is the same for all units - on the reverse (inner) side there are small holes and arrow-shaped stamps. The arrows indicate the direction in which the pin should be removed;
  3. insert the tip of an awl or needle into this slot, lightly press it perpendicular to the link - in this case, the pin with the convex part that fixes its position in the bracelet structure (namely, this hole) will move slightly. After this, you should tilt the tool in the opposite direction of the arrow - this will move the pin in the desired direction;
  4. Please note that part of the pin with a convex drop is visible from the design of the bracelet; pull it with your fingers in order to completely remove it. If you cannot grab it by the edge, use tweezers, but it is worth remembering that if you use excessive force, you can scratch or damage the pin;
  5. the remaining unnecessary links should be removed in the same way.
Reassembly is carried out in the reverse order and is not a complicated process; you should only pay attention to a few nuances:
  • it is advisable to insert the pins sequentially - moving from the main body of the watch;
  • you should ensure that the pin is in the correct position - the drop should sit perfectly in the hole in the link, while the shackle or play is evidence of incorrect and incorrect assembly;
  • if you cannot completely put the pin in place, you can use an awl or a needle - lightly press its tip onto the pin from the “entry” side - it is quite difficult to do this with your fingers, and a fraction of a millimeter may not be enough to completely seat the pin in place.
It is also recommended to save all unnecessary parts of the bracelet, because they may be useful in case of breakage or defect of any element. Also, do not forget about the possibility of increasing the size of your wrist or passing on the watch by inheritance - in this case, returning the links to their original place will take less time, effort and money, because you will have all the necessary parts in stock.

The answer is in pictures from the Internet

The electronics market is going through interesting times: the constant change in technical trends dictates its own conditions, and most leaders have to adapt to the constantly changing environment. The Michael Kors brand can be considered a kind of conservative from the world of wearable electronics. The company relies on proven and proven technologies, minimizing the introduction of innovations into its line of gadgets. The smartwatches of the brand in question are an attempt to release a mass product, aimed primarily at adherents of stylish and modern solutions rather than those who prefer all the newest and most relevant from the world of electronics.

This wearable gadget can easily be put on a par with famous equipment from manufacturers such as LG, Motorola and Huawei. The Michael Kors smart watch looks very stylish and modern. True, the material used to make the case this time let us down: it can’t be called expensive at all. It is made from high quality stainless steel, The screen is protected by durable glass. The weight of the device is 249 grams. In terms of reliability, the gadget fits into the class average, and the body is assembled to a solid “B plus”.

At the top of the makeshift crown you can find corporate label, two stylish letters “MK”, reflecting affiliation with the company. It looks organic and not at all pretentious, a sense of proportion is observed. From a distance, Michael Kors watches can be mistaken for traditional analog watches. Most often, the model is confused with products from another Dylan line: they have similar straps.

The control buttons are somewhat smaller, and the smartwatch is also equipped with a full-fledged digital monitor designed to work on the Android Wear operating system. Depending on the delivery package, the material from which the strap is made may vary: most often it is silicone with a longitudinal grooved structure, but you can also find a kit with a leather strap. However, no one bothers you to replace the standard complete belt with any one you like.

Important! Straight out of the box, the model is able to offer the owner a large number of dials made in different styles. This makes the watch individual, because the background and hands can now be changed depending on the mood.

The gadget is made in a unisex style, so it is equally suitable for both men and women. But the case of the Michael Kors smart watch turned out to be quite voluminous, its length is 46 mm. On a small hand there is a clock looks a little bulky. However, for beautiful ladies there is a model with a smaller body, which is equally suitable for men with small hands and for teenagers. The body features sporty lines and trendy stylized curves. The watch is available in different colors.

Specifications and battery

The main parameters of the watch are as follows: screen diagonal 1.39 inches, resolution 454x454. The system is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 2100 processor. There is only 512 MB of RAM and 4 GB of permanent memory, of which a certain amount of space is allocated for the operating system itself. However, this watch does not require more volume. Reviews from owners indicate that the device operates smoothly, without “freezes” or noticeable slowdowns. The display in the entire line of watches is made using AMOLED technology and has a good resolution for a watch.

The battery capacity of the proposed model is very small, only 370 mAh. However, even manufacturers of A-brands rarely install a capacity higher than that indicated in their equipment. The device cannot boast of record battery life, but it is quite enough for several days. Much depends on the operating mode.

Important! Tests show operation for 45 hours in active mode, or 37 hours when Always-On is activated. Even with the most active use, the model always worked for more than 24 hours.

So, most likely, you will have to charge the gadget often, maybe even every day. But if you use the gadget like a regular watch, then one charge can last for a week or even longer.

Deserves special mention Charger. Here it is made in the form of a magnetic washer, which is applied to the back of the device. It is not immediately clear whether charging is happening or not, so at first the user constantly moves the washer from place to place, checking its functionality. This is due to the fact that the magnet that secures the charging connector has a small attractive force. You just need to twist the charger to understand whether it is connected or not.

Functional

In addition to its stylish appearance, smart watches are ready to offer the user good technical potential.

  1. The gadget is equipped three sensors. Of course, there is a gyroscope here. An accelerometer can also be very useful. But the light sensor is not present in all models.
  2. The watch is equipped built-in microphone. The usefulness of this function is the subject of a separate discussion, but the fact that there is a microphone is important for the review, and it is quite acceptable, considering that this is a watch and not a full-fledged smartphone.
  3. The model also has speaker, which, in essence, allows you to use the watch as an intercom. It sounds promising, but will the battery power allow the device to fully operate the device in active assistant mode for a smartphone?
  4. You can control your Michael Kors Access watch via a special shell from Google. The model is receiving an update to version 2.0, but this does not introduce any original functions to the interface.
  5. Testing of wireless communication revealed good WLAN and Bluetooth activity. True, being constantly turned on, the module quite actively drains the battery.
  6. The gadget can track walking activity, but it does not have any additional active tracking capabilities, only basic ones. Therefore, for lovers of long walks, carefully included in training schedules with all possible parameters, it would be better to look for a more functional device.
  7. You can connect to the watch not only a smartphone running on Android OS, but also iPhone. Both operating systems work equally well with the clock. True, the Apple operating system does not always synchronize updates of feeds and social networks correctly.
  8. In the model There is no built-in GPS or NFC module. Connection to a smartphone is only possible using Bluetooth. The wireless communication protocol is current, version 4.1. This model does not have an LTE modem, which looks a little strange, considering that the manufacturer, as a rule, equips its device with either GPS or LTE for more convenient communication.
  9. The manufacturer states that smart watches are waterproof and are able to withstand immersion to depths with pressures up to 1 ATM. Again, not the most outstanding result, but the good news is that you can safely swim on the beach wearing the watch. However, diving deeply is still not recommended, as there is a possibility of damaging the device.

In general, the watch turned out to be worthy of attention. The model will have a certain demand, but you should not count on fantastic interest from the buyer. Today the market is able to offer a sufficiently wide range of material to create active competition. To surprise, the watch definitely lacks sparkle. However, this drawback is easily offset by high-quality assembly and a durable case. In addition, the watch looks quite stylish.

Where to buy

You can buy the original both in Russia and by ordering through online trading platforms. You can find an interesting offer online, while large retail chains tend to maintain a high price tag for a long time. The average price for a gadget is around $345. The kit with a leather strap will cost a little more. The most expensive model will cost $395. The case of this model is made in gold color and also comes with a pave strap.

Advice! If desired, you can purchase a branded accessory: a silicone strap will cost the user $45, and a leather strap costs five dollars more.

Conclusion

Despite the discreet design, modest graphical shell and lack of active tracking, the watch can be called quite good. It is rather a stylish accessory, as the MK brand once again hints at. The technical characteristics have not changed much over the course of the two generations, so you can choose a device based on availability; the hardware and software base is almost the same.

ATTENTION! The correct barcode does not provide a 100% guarantee of the originality of the product. However, an incorrect barcode is a clear sign of counterfeit.

Michael Kors watches can often be seen on the wrist of some public figure, politician, athlete, or actor. The beauty of them is that an ordinary person can easily afford them. The minimum cost of the accessory is about 140 dollars. However, you should be wary of fakes.

Some fakes can be identified immediately, since they are of very low quality. And some are so close to the original that it can be difficult to calculate. But still, there are differences. And they must be remembered.

Package

We remember that Michael Kors watches have leather packaging in the form of a dark brown cube. It has no foreign unpleasant odors, any stains or defects. The seams are even and clear. In early models, the lid with the company logo covers part of the box, and in later models the side walls completely.
The box contains a brown rectangular watch pad and instructions in the form of a booklet.

Original packaging: left – old version, right – new (high lid)

Product material

The watches themselves are made of ceramics, high-quality plastic, and genuine leather. They feel heavy and smooth to the touch. Copies, due to the use of cheap low-quality raw materials, are much lighter.
In original models, the crown, case back, dial and clasp are marked with a special engraving. On the cover, in addition to engraving, the code of this watch model, the material of production and information about the water resistance of the watch are indicated.

The Smartwatch universe is divided: Apple feels confidently in the lead, followed by Android Wear models with a noticeable margin. There was a similar division. And if it weren't for the Google ecosystem, everything would have been much worse. Using the Michael Kors Access Grayson watch as an example, it is very interesting to assess the state of Android Wear at the beginning of 2018. In our review, we'll talk about the pros and cons of developing a smartwatch from a third-party manufacturer like Fossil.

However, Fossil cannot be called a newcomer to the IT world. Nevertheless, it has already released various models of smart watches, having realized quite a long time ago that, to one degree or another, “smart” watches will invade the market of classic models.

At 47mm in diameter, the Michael Kors Access Grayson is one of the largest smartwatches on the market.

The fact that the Michael Kors Access Grayson watch is based on a Fossil model cannot be told at first glance. The watch manufacturer is not listed on the product page, except in small print on the box. But if you've been interested in the smartwatch market, you probably know that Fossil models are sold under many other brands. After all, not every fashion brand has enough money to invest in developing its own smartwatch.

Single basis

The Grayson watch is based on a hardware platform that is used in many other Fossil Group smartwatches. However, there were no serious hardware differences between the Android Wear models; with the exception of the display and battery, all watches of the same generation are quite close to each other.

The most important component is the Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 2100, the chip was introduced in early 2016, it was initially aimed at smartwatches, unlike the same Snapdragon 400 (MSM8026), which has been present in various Smartwatches for a long time. However, both chips are quite close to each other. In the case of Snapdragon Wear 2100, we get the same four Cortex-A7 cores, which can operate at frequencies up to 1.2 GHz, the process technology is identical - 28 nm LP. The GPU, called Adreno 304, is identical to the Adreno 305 in the Snapdragon 305 except for a few details.

However, for Michael Kors Access Grayson all this is not important. The manufacturer has not implemented support for GPS or NFC; communication is only possible via Bluetooth 4.1 and WLAN (802.11 a/b/g/n); There is no version of Smartwatch with an LTE modem. As with almost all Android Wear models, we get 512 MB of RAM and 4 GB of internal memory, a microphone and a speaker. The watch has a built-in accelerometer, gyroscope, and light sensor; There is no heart rate sensor.

Fossil has placed a light sensor between the display and the bezel. The display we get is completely round, but there is a frame around the panel. It is not entirely clear whether the width of the frame is adjusted to the size of the sensor. The display is based on AMOLED technology, the diagonal is 1.39", the resolution is 454 x 454 pixels, so the picture pleasantly pleases with high detail. Color rendition and brightness, on the other hand, are average at best. AMOLED colors are traditionally saturated, but the color temperature is about 7,500 K is too strongly shifted to the cold side. The maximum brightness of 334 cd/m² is also not the highest. It is sufficient for working indoors, but outdoor brightness is still not enough - especially in direct sunlight. And glare on the display interferes. Automatic brightness adjustment works reliable, and not only worth choosing it for this reason: in the case of manual brightness adjustment, only five levels are available.

Inside the Michael Kors Access Grayson is a typical Android Wear hardware platform.

The rest of the hardware is unremarkable. The microphone and speaker do their job well; connections via Bluetooth and WLAN worked correctly in our tests.

The battery capacity of 370 mAh is slightly higher than the typical level for smartwatches of this format, but one cannot expect record-breaking battery life. In our tests, we got a result of 37 hours with the Always-On function active and 44 hours without it. But even with active use, the watch always lasted at least a day. In any case, you will still have to recharge them every day. For charging, the watch is inserted into a magnetic dock, reminiscent of the Apple Watch solution. But the workmanship is still inferior to Apple, and the watch does not “sit” in it as tightly.

Design is not Grayson's strong point

To be honest, considering the reputation of the Michael Kors brand, the design of the watch was a little disappointing. But overall I liked the Grayson case. The design is based on classic wristwatches; similarities include the crown and two pushers.

Plenty of stainless steel: the Michael Kors Access Grayson gives an impression of high quality

The manufacturer used stainless steel, in our case it was Navy Blue; but the watch can also be purchased in gold, silver or black cases. The folding bracelet is also made of stainless steel in the same shade as the watch case. As a result, the watch looks very harmonious. If you prefer contrast, you can easily replace the bracelet.

The workmanship of the Michael Kors Access Grayson is convincing, but the crown is too easy to press.

The smartwatch is quite large. With dimensions of 49 x 49 x 13 mm, the case looks very bulky, so the Grayson is not suitable for small wrists. This size cannot be disguised by design elements such as a protruding display with rings around the bezel, the Michael Kors logo on the crown, etc.

Considering the $350 price tag, the build quality is predictably high. The case looks solid and the strap clasp works reliably. However, the crown is too easy to press. The other two buttons, the bottom one for launching Google Play, the top one for a custom action (it can be programmed), have more pronounced resistance. The watch is protected from dust and moisture according to the IP67 standard. Considering Grayson's target audience, it hardly makes sense to protect the watch more strongly - the owner probably won't swim or take a shower in it.

Android Wear 2.0 with its advantages and disadvantages

Android Wear has literally become a savior for manufacturers like Fossil. Google offers a fairly flexible platform that can be adapted in many ways, including redesigning it to fit the desired brand.

As for the watch faces, there are 26 options available in the Michael Kors style, and there is also a pre-installed proprietary application. However, the latter serves, in fact, only as an interface for social networks and watch faces. The ability to automatically change dials or sort by color would be nice. Finally, there is no proprietary smartphone companion app for the Michael Kors Access Grayson. To set up and operate, all you need is the Android Wear application, which is available for Android (from version 4.3 and later) and iOS (from version 9 and later).

The Michael Kors Access Grayson watch is based on Android Wear 2.0 with all its advantages and disadvantages. We get the usual Google Assistant and set of applications

Everything else is familiar from other Android Wear 2.0 models. Some applications are pre-installed: Google Fit, weather, calendar, phone, etc. Through Google Play, you can easily install additional applications on your Smartwatch; you don’t need a smartphone for this. Google Assistant, launched by a long press on the crown, showed its best side. Latency is low, and the application interface is well adapted to the Grayson round display.

The Michael Kors Access Grayson is controlled through the standard Android Wear app; Fossil does not offer a proprietary companion app.

The Michael Kors Access Grayson watch offers 26 Michael Kors-inspired watch faces to choose from

Of course, Android Wear provides configuration flexibility, but the range of applications is not so extensive. Fitness apps aside, many popular Android programs are missing. Some applications can be installed directly on the Smartwatch using Google Play, others require first installation on the smartphone and then on the watch. Not very convenient, but Apple and Samsung have moved much further.

Conclusion

Compared to the first generation of Android Wear watches introduced in 2014, the Michael Kors Access Grayson marks a significant improvement. From a toy for nerds, smartwatches have turned into a fashion accessory. It's worth giving credit here not only to Google, but also to manufacturers like Fossil. They were able to provide a ready-made platform for fashion brands, something Apple or Samsung cannot boast of.

But Grayson cannot yet be called a “golden mean” between form and function. The Michael Kors style has been lost in favor of more practical details. With the exception of the highly detailed display, the equipment can only be called average. The same goes for battery life. The watch is not suitable for users leading an active lifestyle, not so much because of the size and weight, but because of the lack of sensors and the low accuracy of step detection - in our tests the error was 20%.

But if you want a watch with some intelligence for parties and restaurants, the Michael Kors Access Grayson is worth a look. It is unlikely that there are many other Smartwatch models on the market that are so close in design to classic wristwatches. Even the similarities are smaller.

But you will have to pay a decent amount - $350. If you're willing to give up a stainless steel bracelet, the silicone option is cheaper. If you don’t need Android Wear, then you can take the Grayson Hybrid option. The price is also quite high: $275 with a leather bracelet and $325 with a stainless steel bracelet.

Benefits of Michael Kors Access Grayson:

  • Highly detailed display
  • High quality workmanship
  • Third-party bracelets can be used

Disadvantages of Michael Kors Access Grayson:

  • No NFC support
  • Limited set of sensors
  • Measuring steps with a large error

Smart watches have long become a functional addition to any smartphone. Michael Kors smart watches are made according to classic trends, while modern electronic filling makes them real assistants - they will track your physical activity, notify you about an important call or notification, and wake you up at the right time. A full review of this device, its functionality and technical side is in this material.

Appearance

Michael Kors specialize in making watches in a classic style - at first glance, you wouldn’t be able to tell that underneath the stainless steel shell is hidden not an ordinary quartz movement, but modern electronics that work in conjunction with smartphones. The company offered its version of smartwatches in 2014 and since then has been constantly updating the electronic components of the device. There are 2 directions on the domestic market:

  • men's models "Dylan" in a laconic design (diameter 4.6 cm);
  • women's devices “Bradshaw”, “Sofia”, stylized in gold (diameter 4.45 cm).

The design of all Michael Kors smart watches corresponds to current trends and at the same time allows them to maintain classic severity - models are presented in metallic color, gloss black, classic gold and rose gold. The dial is always round, but some models have a barely noticeable “chin”, the presence of which is due to technical features.

On the right side of the device there are from one to three buttons, thanks to which the user has access to the settings of the smart watch and its interface. The strap consists of links and is usually made of stainless steel to match the color of the watch itself. Strict models with silicone bracelets, distinguished by longitudinal stripes, are also offered.

On a note! Depending on the model, the smart watch may come with a set of interchangeable straps, as well as instructions. For some samples, a leather bracelet can be ordered. The removable mechanism allows you to easily change straps, combining colors and experimenting with styles.

Functional

Michael Kors smart watches are equipped with the Android Wear operating system version 2.0 (2017), which provides extensive capabilities that are mostly free. The software used can be updated automatically.

Important! The Bluetooth protocol (version 4.1) allows the device to interface with smartphones running iOS and Android operating systems.

Thanks to pairing with a smartphone, in addition to its intended purpose, the device informs its owner about all incoming notifications. So, smart watches notify you with a slight vibration about messages that arrive by email and social networks, about incoming SMS and calls, as well as other notifications from other applications that require the user’s attention. To minimize the flow of messages and, accordingly, to increase the owner’s concentration, as well as increase battery life, applications can be blocked from displaying notifications so that the watch only alerts about really important events.

Smart devices allow you to not only receive messages, but also send them, as well as communicate in popular instant messengers. In addition, the Michael Kors gadget has a number of interesting functional features, summarized in a table for convenience.

Equipment Opportunity
Microphone The built-in microphone allows you to use the voice assistants Google Assistant or Siri (for iPhone), without needing to take out your phone.
Speaker The presence of a speaker makes it possible to use a smart watch as an intercom, but this can quickly drain the battery.
Sensors The gadget is equipped with 3 sensors: a gyroscope, an accelerometer, and light.
On-screen buttons When playing music, you can control the playlist using on-screen buttons: rewind a track, select another song, adjust the volume.
Internet Via the Internet (via Wi-Fi, 2-3-4G) you can exchange files with other devices.
Fitness tracker The watch also combines the functions of a fitness tracker - special sensors track the user’s activity in real time and display information in a separate application.
Protection The body of the device is reliably protected from moisture - the manufacturer claims water resistance for immersion up to 10 m, which allows you to track body parameters even when visiting the pool. However, to achieve this, we had to minimize the number of holes and even sacrificed the charging connector.
Charger Instead of the contact charging method, a wireless magnetic method is used - a pad for contactless power supply is supplied with the watch. When the battery runs out, the device just needs to be placed on top of the charger (or vice versa - on top of the device), and after a few hours it will be ready for use again.
Alarm Regardless of the phone, the watch can act as an alarm clock using strong vibration.

Technical side

In addition to the classic look, users are attracted by the advanced characteristics of the device, which allow them to fully appreciate the functionality and convenience of the device. So, the system processor is Qualcomm_Snapdragon_Wear_2100. Gadget performance is limited 512 MB RAM and 4 GB internal memory, part of which is “eaten” directly by the OS.

Clock face

The manufacturer presents two types of dials - mechanical and display. Mechanical dial made in a classic style - arrows and numbers arranged in a circle. Inside the case there is a conventional mechanism, supplemented by a vibration module, a wireless communication interface and a magnetic coil for charging. Despite the simplicity of the design, this version of the watch lacks the ability to customize (modify) the dial.

But there is such an opportunity models with display(for example, smart watches from the Access line, including Sophie). There are an infinite number of options for dial designs - from ready-made ones to independently created ones. Thus, Michael Kors allows users to independently select a background with arrows and change them in one motion. In such models, the entire clock mechanism is replaced with a round display with high resolution and high-quality backlighting, which provides a good overview.

Important! Main characteristics of the display: diagonal - 1.4 inches, resolution - 454x454, technology - AMOLED. If we take into account that we are talking about a watch, then these parameters are very worthy.

Battery

Depending on the model, the watch is equipped with a battery of up to 400 mAh (for the Dylan line - 370, for Bradshaw models - 300), which is slightly higher than the usual figure in comparison with competitors. But the increase did not affect autonomy in any way - actual tests show that the original with the Always-On function enabled, it could last no more than 36 hours; when this mode was turned off, the operating time increased to 45 hours. In any case, to ensure that your smartwatch is always ready for use, you will need to charge it every day. However, if you use the device only as a watch, the battery should last for a week.

Advantages and disadvantages

Like any electrical device, Michael Kors smartwatches have their strengths and weaknesses, which, as a rule, are most clearly reflected in reviews from users who have already tried the device in real life.

pros

The classic design combined with metal as the main material makes the watch visually attractive and fully consistent with its price and target segment, as it is intended for business people who prefer a laconic but corporate style. Users also appreciated wireless charging, high degree of moisture resistance and high-quality display, which makes such smart watches ideal companions in everyday life.

Minuses

The price is not the watch’s strongest point, as it is significantly higher than its competitors, with similar technical characteristics. At the same time, the device does not have NFC, which means it is impossible to make payments and connect modern wireless devices (and these are the original 2018 models). In addition, these gadgets lack GPS and LTE modem Users also don’t like the fact that the increased battery capacity has significantly increased the thickness and weight of the watch case (249 g), and there is virtually no increase in autonomy.

So, summarizing all of the above, it should be noted that the watch is more suitable for users who value classic performance and reliability in operation. At a high cost, the watch does not have modern wireless interfaces, autonomy remains at an average level, and the dimensions of the device itself are quite impressive - not for everyone. However, user reviews are divided - some like the size of the products, while others would prefer to buy less voluminous everyday models. Perhaps the reader will be interested in familiarizing himself with the best models or with the prestigious and laconic one.
