Colpitis

It seems that nail polishes have always been with us, but in fact, this beauty product is not much more than 80 years old! People loved to decorate nails in ancient times, using henna and other natural dyes, resin, wax and vegetable oils. However, the first varnish in its usual form appeared in 1934 and immediately took its place in the first beauty rows. Since then, varnishes have not lost in popularity. Everything you need to know about this tool, you will find in this article.

What are nail polishes - 18 types

Nail polishes are decorative and medicinal. The latter, as the name implies, are aimed at solving problems: they strengthen nails, help to cope with delamination, fungus and other troubles (read more about nail care). Decorative varnishes are responsible for interesting nail images: let's talk about them in more detail.

Liquid gloss varnish

Lac is the ancestor. A monochromatic finish with a glossy effect is still considered traditional. And even if you do not belong to the community of nail maniacs, you will definitely find several bottles of bright ones. Sometimes this type of coating is called cream or enamel.

Pearly Lacquer

For decades, nail polish with a pearly sheen was the most popular - partly because, for example, in the Soviet Union, others were not available. In the 2000s, they forgot about it, but a few seasons ago, leading brands made sure that mother-of-pearl varnish triumphantly returned to the beauty arena.

© essie

True, this tool has several disadvantages - mother-of-pearl varnish can visually “age” your hands. In addition, it emphasizes all the irregularities nail plate. Therefore, with this choice, it is important to ensure that your hands and nails are in perfect condition.

Matt lacquer

One of the hottest trends recent years- non-shiny lacquer finish. On sale there are colored varnishes that initially guarantee a similar effect. But you can also buy a transparent matte finish that can turn any glossy varnish in matt. Read more about how to make a matte manicure, we wrote in this

Varnish with large shiny particles in the composition. Especially popular are transparent top coats with abundant glitter, ready to make any manicure festive in a couple of minutes. For a detailed article dedicated exclusively to glitter manicure, look for this.

Perhaps, in the modern world, shimmers are the second most popular varnishes after classic glossy ones. Delicate radiance is provided by small sparkling particles in the composition. If the varnish is light, then it can be used in everyday manicure. It is important to emphasize that such varnishes differ from glitters in the smaller size of the shining crumbs.

"Sand" varnish

Varnish with small particles that make the coating uneven, "sandy". The same effect can be achieved if you buy a special powder in a store for professional craftsmen and apply it on top of a regular varnish. The main disadvantage of such a coating is that it is more prone to chipping than others.

"Caviar" coating

Like the "sand" varnish, such a tool belongs to the type of textural, but it includes larger colored particles that resemble small beads. Such varnishes are rarely produced ready-made, more often “caviar” manicure is created using loose pigments.

Duochrome and multichrome

"Lac-chameleon" changes its shade depending on the angle of view due to small shiny particles that glare differently in the rays of light. If the varnish shimmers in two shades, then you have a duochrome, if there are more shades, then we are talking about multichrome.

It shimmers on the nails with all the colors of the rainbow, reminiscent of the stains of a gasoline film. By the way, this technique is now in trend and in.

Changes its shade depending on the ambient temperature. It is enough to put your nails under a stream of warm water so that the color of the coating changes, as if by magic. Radical changes should not be expected (blue will not turn into red), but instantly creating an effect on the nails with a smooth transition from one shade to another will work for sure.

Creates the effect of "cracking" on the nails. For a more impressive look, first paint your nails with a contrasting colored varnish, and apply a craquelure coating on top: the first layer will “look through” through the “cracks”. Such a varnish must be fixed with a transparent top coat, otherwise it will not last long.

Fluorescent varnish

In daylight, it looks like an ordinary varnish of a bright "acid" shade, under ultraviolet rays it begins to glow. The best thing for a disco!

Magnetic varnish

lacquer jelly

As the name implies, it has a jelly texture and lays down in a translucent layer, even if the shade seems to be saturated in the bottle. Often in the composition of such varnishes there are large shiny particles. It doesn't take a lot of courage to create a jelly-effect manicure, but what about?

gel polish

A finish that threatens to supplant classic nail polishes: Today, gel polishes are almost more popular than conventional ones. And this is not surprising, because such a coating, hardening under the influence of ultraviolet radiation, remains on the nails in its original form for up to three weeks without chips and scratches.

© essie

At the same time, outwardly, gel polish cannot be distinguished from any other! The only inconvenience is that it will not work to remove it with the usual liquid, you will have to stock up. Previously, gel coating could only be done in the salon, but today many beauty brands are releasing kits for home use.

Base coat

Transparent varnish, which is applied to the nail plate before using the base shade varnish. It is better not to skip this stage in manicure: the base coat protects the nails from the effects of color pigments, prevents the nails from exfoliating and turning yellow. By the way, if the last trouble did happen, to help you.

The top coat is applied at the last stage to fix the manicure. Such a varnish significantly prolongs the life of a manicure. For the best effect, use a top coat of the same brand as the base coat.

What is nail polish made of?

The list of ingredients on a bottle of nail polish looks like a Chinese letter to most of us. What lies behind the incomprehensible names?

© essie

Resin that literally "glues" and holds all the components together. As a rule, there are two types of resin in the composition at once - film-forming (it is she who is designated by the word nitrocellulose) and adhesive (look for the inscriptions polymer, copolymer or resin). The film-forming resin is responsible for the glossy shine, while the adhesive polymer makes the texture of the varnish more elastic and allows it to adhere better to the surface of the nail plate.

© site

Ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, propyl acetate, isopropyl acetate

All these components are solvents, which are responsible for the easy application and quick drying of the varnish. As the compound dries, the solvent evaporates, leaving the surface dry. the main problem, which faces manufacturers - to make sure that the solvent does not evaporate too quickly, otherwise bubbles will appear. Alas, the buyer can check this only after applying nail polish.

Stearalkonium hectorite, stearalkonium bentonite

Thickening additives that help mix resin and solvent without allowing color pigments to settle to the bottom of the bottle.

UV stabilizer that prevents the color and texture of the varnish from changing under the influence of sunlight.

Trimethyl pentanyl diisobutyrate, triphenyl phosphate, camphor and ethyl tosylamide

These components are plasticizers, they do not allow the resin to thicken and prolong the durability of your manicure.

Dyes and pigments, which determine the color of the varnish. Dyes are often organic, but pigments are not.

Mica is added to varnish to add a glossy sheen to it. In rare cases, particles of natural pearls and aluminum powder are also added to the varnish.

How to paint nails with varnish

It seems that it could be easier to gently spread the varnish over the nail plate? But many cannot cope with this beauty task on their own, preferring to entrust the process to a salon master. Perhaps our step-by-step photo instruction can make a difference.

© essie

Wipe your nails with nail polish remover or a special degreaser, even if you have not applied cream to your hands before, and there are no residues of old varnish on your nails. By doing this, you can be sure that you have prepared the ground for the perfect coverage. It is better to use not cotton pads, but a lint-free cloth that will not leave small lint on the nails.

Apply a base coat to protect your nails.

Before using the varnish, warm the bottle a little in the palms of your hands: the product will become more pliable.

Apply two coats of color and let dry thoroughly. You should act like this: first place a drop of varnish at the edge of the cuticle in the center and draw a line to the tip of the nail. Then fill with varnish the space to the right and left of the drawn line. After the second coat, do not forget to “seal” the edge of each nail, as it were, in order to further prolong the durability of the coating.

How to remove varnish from the skin around the nail

Often, after applying varnish, a little (or a lot) of the product is on the skin around the nail plate. This mistake often cannot be avoided even by professional nail artists, but it is very easy to fix. Wait for the polish to dry and follow one of the recommendations below.

© essie

The easiest way is to soak a clean, thin nail brush in nail polish remover and gently rub off excess nail polish stains. If there is no special brush, use an orange stick. It is better not to do this with a cotton swab, as it can leave small villi on the surface of the nail that will ruin the manicure.

If you are not in a hurry, just wait for the varnish to dry and take a shower. Under the influence of warm water, the skin will be cleaned of varnish on its own. © site

Nail Color, 6 Ballet Slippers, Essie

The very perfect pale pink pointe-colored polish (in fact, the name of the polish is translated as “Ballet Shoes”). By the way, it is with this varnish that the Queen of Great Britain Elizabeth II paints her nails - and no more!

What color polish do you most often choose? Leave your comment.

It is not always possible to visit a nail salon to change or renew nail polish. Therefore, the ability to paint nails beautifully and correctly has not harmed anyone in life. But, despite the seeming simplicity of applying varnish, anyone who has ever tried to do it rarely achieves a good result the first time. If you still can’t make up your nails evenly and beautifully like in a salon, our article is for you.

Preparation for applying varnish

To keep the varnish longer, remove the previous layer and degrease the nails well. Try not to touch the fat-free surface with your fingers, because they always have particles of sebum on them.

Secondly, check how suitable the varnish is for use, especially if you have not used it for a long time. Many people add nail polish remover to the bottle, but later, when using such a varnish, they risk getting an uneven coating. And even if the varnish lays down evenly, it is unlikely to last on the nails as long as a new one.

If you still do not want to part with your favorite color, then buy a special liquid. But remember that even with this liquid you can dilute the varnish only once or twice.

Once you have verified that the varnish is suitable for use, shake the bottle well before opening. Many lacquer manufacturers put several metal balls into the bottle beforehand, they help to shake the lacquer faster. But you yourself can throw a couple of small beads.

Let's divert your attention for a couple more minutes to talk about the brush. Professionals prefer to use a special brush to apply varnish, and not the one that is attached to the cap. Get one brush to feel the difference and ease of use. The only drawback of such a brush is that after each use it must be thoroughly rinsed in nail polish remover.

Before applying colored polish, coat your nails with a base that will increase the adhesion of the materials and prolong the life of your manicure. The rules for applying the coating are the same as for varnish, and we will talk about this below. Wait until the base is completely dry.

What color varnish to choose

In the salon, the master, as a rule, asks the opinion of the client regarding the varnish, he can also warn against the wrong choice. If you paint your nails yourself, and it is precisely today that the manicure should be at its best - in the evening there will be a date or an opportunity to wear an elegant silver bracelet or a Claddagh ring - there is no one to consult with. Therefore, you need to know how this or that color looks on the nails, and for what events which color is suitable.

Dark or bright neon color looks best on short nails, it even has the property to lengthen them a little. Such varnishes are equally good for manicure and pedicure. But on a very long nails dark varnish should be used very carefully, as it can look vulgar.

Red lacquers also require caution. Such nails are good only with bright, extravagant clothes. Long scarlet or coral manicure with business suit turns any woman into the heroine of an erotic thriller.

Pearlescent varnishes should be applied with extreme care, as they give out any error of the master. But on the other hand, they look very elegant and are suitable for both daytime and evening wear.

But for work - it doesn't matter if you have to draw up documents all day, tie a Celtic knot or just play solitaire - it's best to choose varnishes as close as possible to the natural color of the nail or colorless. Remember that in many companies such a trifle is stipulated in the regulation on the corporate style of clothing and the behavior of employees.

Now you can start applying color.

  • Immerse the brush in the varnish, then shake off the first two drops on the edge of the bottle.
  • Now place the brush for a second vertically in the center of the nail plate, a millimeter from the cuticle.
  • Do not let the varnish spread and touch the cuticle. Tilt the brush towards you and quickly draw a line to the end of the nail.
  • Without allowing the first stroke to harden, perform two side strokes in the same way, covering the entire surface of the nail. Those. full coverage of the entire nail plate is performed in three movements.
  • When brushing over the nail, do not touch the skin. If the varnish has run a little, take cotton swab, soak it in nail polish remover and remove excess paint from the skin.
  • Cover the nails of both hands with the first coat of varnish. Usually, when you finish the last finger, the polish on the first one is dry and ready for a new coat.
  • Apply a second coat of varnish and wait for it to dry completely.
  • To speed up drying, you can put your fingers under a stream of cold water.
  • You can dry the polish with a hair dryer, but keep in mind that hot air will dull the polish a little.
  • Finish any coating by applying a fixer - a transparent liquid that increases the strength of the varnish and protects the color layer from mechanical damage.

Perfectly painted nails can cheer you up, match your outfit, express your personality, especially today, when you can choose from a huge number of color variations. You can use classic red, cheerful yellow, creative green or mysterious burgundy among others. With all this beauty, it can be easy to forget that painting your own nails (without making a mess) can be a bit tricky. Read on to choose The best way creating beautifully colored nails at home, you may never have to go to a manicure specialist again!

Steps

Begin

Choose a nail polish color that suits you.

Choose a place where you will paint your nails. When choosing the right place to paint your nails, look for a clean, solid surface in a well-lit room. Desk or kitchen worktop a good choice Just be sure to lay a paper towel down so you don't stain the surface. The room should also be well ventilated, as fumes from nail polish and nail polish remover are harmful to health.

Gather the necessary supplies. Collect cotton balls or pads, cotton swabs, nail polish remover, wire cutters, nail file, cuticle stick, and a bottle of clear nail polish. Having all of these on hand will speed up the painting process and reduce the chance of you smearing your nail.

Wipe off the old varnish from the nails (if any). Dip a cotton ball into the nail polish remover and hold it on your nail for about 10 seconds. Then rub the ball on your nail to remove the polish. Use cotton swabs to remove any leftover nail polish from the edges of the nail.

  • Even if you haven't had any nail polish applied, you should still go over your nails with nail polish remover before painting to degrease them. This will allow the varnish to be applied more evenly and it will stick better.
  • Trim or file your nails. Use nail clippers if your nails are overgrown or have jagged ends. All your nails should be about the same length. Then use a nail file to flatten the shape of your nails. You can give the tips of the nails rounded or square shape, depending on your preference.

    • When processing nails with a file, always move the file from the edge of the nail to the center, for each side of the nail separately. Each subsequent movement should go in the same direction, never move back and forth, as this weakens the nails and they can break.
  • Push down the cuticle. The cuticle is the area of skin at the base of each nail. She can give unkempt appearance your nails if it is not pushed down before painting your nails. Cuticles are easiest to push back when they are softened, so try soaking your hands in a bowl of warm water for 1-2 minutes. Dry your hands and nails thoroughly, and then take a cuticle stick to push it down to the base of the nail.

Rub the nail polish bottle in your hands for 20-30 seconds to warm it up. This helps to mix the contents of the vial, lifting any pigment that has settled from the bottom. Do not shake the bottle instead, rolling the bottle will prevent blisters in the polish and your nails will be painted evenly.

    Coloring

Apply foundation from colorless varnish. Applying foundation is the best thing you can do when painting your nails. A base coat will give your chosen nail polish a good base to set, increase the durability of the coat, and prevent the color from transferring from the colored nail polish to the nails themselves. Let the base coat dry completely before proceeding further.

    • There is no need to be extra careful when applying colorless varnish, because even if you get a little on the skin, no one will notice it, because there is no color!
    • There are two different types of base coats: a leveling base that eliminates uneven nails and creates a smooth matte surface for painting; and a strengthening base that protects nails and helps them to be stronger and grow faster. If you wish, you can apply a layer of both bases!
  • Press your hand firmly on the table. Do not just put your hand on the table (it may tremble or move), namely, press it against the surface of the table, spreading your fingers apart. Start with your index finger and move towards your little finger. Then raise your hand and lean on thumb about the edge of the table to paint it too.

    • It does not really matter which hand you start painting with: with a working one or not. Just do as you please. The non-working hand always trembles more than the working hand when applying varnish, but practice will help to cope with this.
  • Open the bottle of colored polish and remove any excess from the brush. The presence of the optimal amount of varnish on the brush is the key to creating perfectly painted nails. To achieve this, remove excess varnish from the brush on the inner edge of the neck of the bottle. Knowing how much polish to leave on the brush is the result of experience gained over time!

    • Also pay attention to what kind of brush the varnish has. Most lacquers use round brushes, however, more and more brands are starting to produce lacquers with flat brushes, which allow for easier application of polish and less dirt.
  • Apply a drop of varnish to the base of the nail. Place the brush at the base of the nail just above the cuticle, exactly in the center. Let a drop of polish (enough to cover the entire nail) fall at this point and run back slightly to the very base of the nail.

    • This technique is used by manicure professionals, so it may take some practice, but it is the easiest and most accurate way to apply polish.
  • Use the three-stripe rule. Manicurists and beauty experts agree that the three-strip method is the easiest and cleanest nail art technique. To do this, dip the brush into the blob of polish at the base of the nail and run it straight up the center of the nail to the very tip. Move the brush back at the base of the left nail to draw a second stripe. Use the remaining amount of varnish to draw the third strip on the right.

    • You should have enough polish to cover your nail in a thin layer without having to dip the brush into polish. If you apply too thick a layer of varnish, it will take much longer to dry and the chance of accidentally smearing it will be much higher.
    • When applying side stripes, do not completely varnish the edges of the nail, leave an imperceptible gap between the nail and the skin. This gap will be barely noticeable, but you will not stain your hands with varnish.
  • Allow the first coat of polish to dry completely before applying the next. Almost all varnishes involve the application of at least a double layer, and some triple. It is much better to apply several thin layers than one thick one. So the result will be neater and less likely to be smudged. It is necessary to allow each coat to dry completely, this will take about 5-10 minutes, depending on the brand of varnish.

    • Apply the second coat of varnish in the same way as the first. Try to be as careful as possible, don't get impatient, trying to finish what you started, otherwise you might ruin everything. Let the second coat of polish dry completely and then decide if you need a third coat.
    • As you can see, painting your nails takes time, and it will take you 30 to 60 minutes to get it right. For this reason, it's a good idea to prepare a snack in advance, turn on the TV, go to the toilet so that you don't get bored while you wait for your nails to dry.
  • Apply a clear top coat. Once your second or third coat of colored polish has dried, apply the final coat of clear polish. This will prevent the color layer from chipping and add extra shine to the nails. Apply a final coat of color to the entire layer, then go over the inside of the tips of each nail with it. This will give greater durability to the coating, and greater strength to the nails.

Clean up your bloopers. Once your nails are completely painted and dry, it's time to clean up the blots that may have happened during the painting. To do this, simply dip a Q-tip in nail polish remover and then run it along the edge of each nail to remove excess polish and occasional stains.

    • Do this slowly and carefully, otherwise the stick may come off on the nail and an unpainted spot will form on it!
    • Try to use your own Q-tip for each nail, otherwise the excess varnish that has collected on the tip of the wand will bring even more dirt.

    Adding a Design

Use nail stickers. Using nail stickers is super easy and they come in a wide variety of shapes and designs. All that is required is to carefully remove the adhesive backing (or, in some cases, apply a little adhesive) and press the decal firmly against the nail for 20-30 seconds to adhere. Small rhinestone stickers (as in the image below) are also popular and can be found in most beauty supply stores.

    • It may be helpful to use tweezers when applying these stickers. This will prevent the sticker from falling off or sticking to your finger instead of your nail.
    • Stickers can be applied only after the varnish has completely dried.
  • Crystallize your nails. Another popular effect that can be created at home is crystallization using glitter or sugar grains. When the top coat is still wet, sprinkle glitter or sugar grains on your nails. When the coating dries, these crystals will be fixed on the nail and give it an interesting effect!

Draw on the nail. The art of nail art covers many different designs and techniques, many of which require a steady hand and a lot of experience! When drawing a picture on a nail, the choice of designs is almost unlimited, they can be applied using varnishes of various colors and toothpicks, for more creativity, you can try gradient, acid, watercolor techniques and create a unique, eye-catching design.

Try using a combination of colors in the color blocking technique. The color matching technique involves using 2-3 or more contrasting colors to create geometric shapes on each nail. You can use a thin brush, rather than the one that comes with the polish, to paint the block of color cleanly and nicely.

  • Get a French manicure. French manicure consists of using natural pink and peach shades of polish with white nail tips. It gives the hands a sophisticated look and with a little practice it can be done at home.

    • Contrary to what you might think, the white tip is painted first with a special white polish found in most manicure kits. In the same kits, you can find special nail stickers that will allow you to apply a perfectly even white strip along the edge of the nail. Otherwise, you will need a very steady hand!
    • Once you are done with the tips and they are completely dry, you can start applying natural color polish over the white tips, and then apply the final colorless coat.
  • Try other nail design ideas. Once you understand the basics of nail art, your possibilities are endless! You can paint a galaxy on your nails, leopard spots or even blots to express yourself. If you can think of something, then you can implement it too! Your possibilities are endless!

    • Be sure you are using a clear base coat! This prevents staining of the nail itself and ensures that your manicure or pedicure lasts longer.
    • Apply a sticky film around the edges of the nail to prevent polish from getting on the cuticle and skin.
    • Do not apply too thick varnish; if you apply several thin layers, then your nails will look neater.
    • Tape will also help you with French manicure.
    • Start with the little finger to reduce the chances of accidentally smearing the previous nail when painting the next one.
    • Put sticky tape around your nails to protect your skin. After adding nail polish, you just need to remove the tape. Tape means you haven't made a mess and you'll be left with perfectly painted perfect nails.
    • If your nails are constantly breaking and polish is making them look rough, get a hardening base (available at beauty stores) that you will need to apply before applying polish. This will improve the condition of your nails, make them stronger, longer and more beautiful when you color them.
    • If nail polish gets on your skin, wait until your nails are dry and then run it under warm water and wipe the polish off your skin.
    • When you paint your left hand, try to keep both hands on the table.
    • Avoid getting polish on the cuticles and leave a small gap between the nail and the skin.
    • If you have liquid latex, you can apply it around your nails (on the skin) to help get your manicure done.
    • If you put some Vaseline on the skin around your nails, the nail polish won't stick to your skin when you paint outside of the nail.
    • Lubricate the skin around the nail with petroleum jelly before coloring the nails. Vaseline will make it easy to remove varnish that has got on the skin.
    • If possible, find someone to let you practice on your nails before you get your hands dirty and can switch to yourself.
    • You can use a hairpin to create a unique fun design in your style!
    • Wet your fingertips in water with a few drops of dish soap to remove any oil from your nails and rinse off the water. Then wipe with nail polish remover.
    • If you push back your cuticles, your nails will appear longer and grow faster.

How to increase the durability of the varnish, speed up its drying and increase the shine? Some simple tips how to paint your nails with regular varnish will help you significantly extend the life of your manicure.

How many times has it happened that literally a day after application, the varnish breaks off and you have to perform a manicure again. It's not even about what you got cosmetic product of dubious quality. Most likely, you just did something wrong. Elementary did not comply with the technology. Let's remember those very "truths" that will help the manicure last longer.

    How to apply varnish correctly

An important point - before applying varnish, the nail must be degreased. For example, using a conventional liquid-remover that does not contain oils. Never varnish your nails if you used hand cream or cuticle oil a few minutes ago. Also, don't paint your nails right after washing your hands. The nail plate has a porous structure and absorbs liquid well. The ideal interval between water procedures and applying varnish is 15-30 minutes. If possible, after degreasing the nail plate, do not touch it. All moisturizers for hands and nails are applied at the very last stage, when the varnish has already "grabbed" well.

Almost all varnishes must be used in combination with a base and top coat. This is also necessary to maintain the health of the nail plate, to improve its smoothness, and also to ensure that the colored varnish lasts longer. Bypassing the base, but using a varnish of bright colors, you risk getting yellow, exfoliating nails. The absence of a top coat will increase the drying time of the varnish, as well as reduce the time it is on the nails.

Classic regular nail polish should be applied in layers. The thinner each layer, the better. For example, a varnish applied in one thick layer will dry for a very long time, it may be distributed unevenly, and the durability of a manicure will definitely upset you. Try to apply varnish in 2-3 layers so that the nails do not shine through, and its shade is uniform.

The durability of the varnish is not only the observance of the application technique, but also certain characteristics of the product. So, for example, you should not count on high durability if you like quick-drying varnishes. A large number of volatile components make the varnish very unstable. In addition, varnishes with effects, for example, "fur", velor, matte - the most short-lived. They dry instantly, but by the evening the first imperfections may appear.

In the process of coloring nails, do not forget to "seal" the end of the nail by running varnish over it. This is often done when creating a gel or gel polish manicure. The free edge of the nail is the weakest part, this is where the polish starts to come off first. By the way, if you urgently need to update your manicure, just tint the ends of the nails, and apply a fresh layer of top coat on the nail itself, which will quickly restore shine to the nails.
