Before the start of the 6th season of the largest television series recent years less than a week left. Already on April 24, "Game of Thrones" will appear on the screens. In the series, based on the series of novels "A Song of Ice and Fire" by George Martin, the action takes place in a fictional world - Westeros. On the one hand, it is a fantastic world of dragons and white walkers, where the seasons last for years. On the other hand, this is such a model of medieval Europe with its quite real intrigues, endless wars, knightly tournaments and love affairs. In this universe, characters who, it would seem, “well, they certainly will not be killed,” on the contrary, die in a variety of different and sophisticated ways, forcing fans to wonder who and how will be the next victim. Yuri Kukin decided not to guess, but to make a selection of the most interesting and mysterious edged weapons used by the heroes of the series in an attempt not to become victims of each other. The history of swords "Game of Thrones" in the material site.

Game of Thrones weapons collection

The harsh North, where people are strong and cold-blooded; sunny Dorn, somewhat reminiscent of Spain, captured by the Moors; Dothraki steppes - the habitat of nomads; free cities, somewhat similar to Genoa with Venice and at the same time to the exotic and wise East - the world of "Game of Thrones", it would seem, has collected almost all the features of different parts of the world, peoples and traditions. The weapons of these peoples are also a way of describing them and conveys the spirit of the times. It is the weapons of Valyrian steel that receive a lot of attention both in the book and in the TV series. Ancient Valyria is a once powerful state that was destroyed by natural disasters (earthquakes, volcanic eruptions). Dragons died under the ruins, magic and other secrets of the great people were forgotten - in particular, the secret of making Valyrian steel, the weapon from which is the most durable and sharpest in the world of "Game of Thrones".

The prototype of Valyrian steel for Martin, apparently, was Damascus steel, which originated in the East (in India and Persia) and later spread throughout Europe. In Russia, Damascus steel was called “bulat” or “red iron”, although it is believed that bulat is not a type of Damascus steel. Nevertheless, due to its properties, high strength and patterns on the blade, which are a characteristic feature of this material, a myth arose that weapons made of Damascus steel were "worth their weight in gold" and "cut armor like butter".

In the world of Game of Thrones, Valyrian steel weapons are said to be forged using dragon fire and magic. Due to its great rarity and unique qualities, it was considered very prestigious to have such a blade: for example, Lord Tywin Lanister for a long time worried that there was no Valyrian sword in his house (their family blade "Bright Roar" was lost), while the Lanister clan was the richest and most powerful in Westeros. On the contrary, in the house of the Starks, the guardians of the North and the main (as many thought) characters of the series, there was a sword - "Ice".

"Ice" - the Stark family sword

"Ice": great two-handed sword

The sword was as wide as a palm, and in length exceeded the height of the eldest son of the family, Ned Stark. This is how the author describes this sword in the first book of the cycle. The Starks great two-handed sword was used only as an instrument of justice (Ned Stark chops off the head of a deserter in the first episode of the series), but never participated in battles. According to George Martin, the sword was too bulky to be used in battle, which was partly true.

German two-handed sword

Nevertheless, since the XIV century, the use of a two-handed great sword has been quite popular in Europe: the improvement of armor leads to the fact that it becomes difficult to pierce it with an ordinary chopping blow, so it becomes necessary to strike with two hands. In length, an average two-handed sword could reach 150 cm, where 120 cm was a blade, 30 was a handle, and it was worn not in a scabbard, but on the shoulder, and therefore they tied the section from the protective hooks to the crosspiece with leather belts.

Those who mastered the two-handed sword were given the title of "master of the long sword"

The so-called trendsetters were the Swiss, which were followed by other countries, especially Germany, in whose regiments there was always a detachment of soldiers (for example, Landsknechts) armed with a long sword. However, the number of warriors who wielded the "two-handed" was limited: the soldiers were specially trained to use this weapon, and after graduation, the warrior received the title of "master of the long sword." And although it was difficult to use this weapon in the heat of battle, a warrior armed with a long two-handed sword looked very intimidating, so the sword was present in the arsenal of European armies until the end of the 16th century.

Long claw

Long Claw: One and a Half Hand Sword

The one-and-a-half-handed sword that belonged to the House of Mormons, and later transferred to the notorious "dunno" John Snow, is perhaps the embodiment of the ideal and most popular sword of medieval Europe. The size of the blade of such a weapon was on average 80-90 cm. Unlike "Ice", it was narrowed to the point, which made it possible to inflict not only chopping, but also piercing blows, penetrating blows (in addition, the sword was also forged from Valyrian steel, which means it was sharp). Such a weapon design - a narrowed blade and an elongated handle - appears in Europe since the XII century and gains the most popularity in the XIV century. But a similar finish, such as the beautiful carved handle of the "Long Claw", has been spreading only since the 14th century, mainly thanks to Italian craftsmen who begin to make not only weapons, but also an object of art, an indicator of status and wealth. The knight wore a one and a half-handed sword in a sheath on his belt on the left, while the rest of the estates, when they could not do without weapons (like merchants on the road), attached the sword to the right near the horse's saddle.

Also in the XIV century, instead of a fuller in the center of the sword, an additional rib appeared, which increased the damage from a penetrating blow, since plate armor was difficult to hit with a still wide blade. The move away from the chopping blow towards the thrusting one occurred, in particular, due to the economy of forces and greater efficiency. Therefore, later broad swords will be replaced mainly by thrusting weapons - swords.

Needle

"Needle"

On it hung a thin blade, too long for a dagger and too short for a man's sword, but just right for her.

From George Martin's book A Storm of Swords. Chapter: Arya XIII "

Arya Stark's "Needle", given to her by her brother Jon Snow, is the only weapon of the series on this list, not made of Valerian steel, but no less deadly for a number of reasons. In fact, a "needle" is a sword: the blade is narrower than that of a sword, and is designed to a greater extent for a thrust than a chopping blow. In European languages, the literal translation of the word sword means "long dagger". Actually, it was the dagger, which every nobleman initially had with him, that the sword finally replaced by the end of the 15th century (for example, in Spain), and in the 16th century, broadswords (swords with a long straight blade) were already included in the arsenal of light Spanish and Italian cavalry.

In the 16th century, duel sword fighting spread throughout Europe.

It was in the 16th century that breteration spread from Italy to Europe - a duel with swords, which caused the development of different techniques fencing and interest in them. Therefore, Bravos is a free city of "Game of Thrones" and fencing teacher Arya Stark Sirio Trout is somewhat reminiscent of Italy.

As befits a good fantasy, on the pages of "A Song of Ice and Fire" weapons often have no less personal data than a living person. The blades of the ruling Houses, the supernatural weapons of the living dead and simply beautiful military "toys" - they all harbor a story full of blood and cruelty.

Ice - A huge broad-bladed sword made from legendary Valyrian steel, passed down through the Stark household from generation to generation. It was forged in Valyria 400 years before the events of Game of Thrones, but the name of the blade is even more ancient: it was worn by the sword that the Starks wielded in the Age of Heroes. The sword itself is too massive for combat, and therefore it serves to administer justice, including death sentences

Loyal to the Oath and Widow's Cry are the swords of House Lannister. The material for them was Valerian steel, left over from the melting down of Ice, the Stark family sword. Master Tobho Mott forged two blades, richly decorating the sword hilts with semi-precious stones. One, wider and longer, became the property of Jaime Lannister, who later gave it to Brienne of Tart. Another was given by Tywin to Joffrey Baratheon's grandson.

His spear is wrapped around a snake, symbolizing the "signature" Dornish character of the prince, as well as the poison with which he covers the blade of his weapon.
