It got its real name in honor of the Emperor Augustus, after whom the Senate named the month, which was especially happy in the life of the emperor. A similar honor was given earlier by the Senate to Julius Caesar, after whom the month of Quintilis was renamed Julius. Initially, Sextilis had only 29 days, but Y. Caesar added to it, as well as to January and December, 2 more days, so that now the month A. has 31 days. During the first 2/3 A. the sun is in the sign of Leo, and in the last third - in the sign of Virgo. The Germans call A. the month of the harvest (Erntemonat). Its Old Slavic name is Serpen.
