Sofa cushions in patchwork technique. Pillowcases in patchwork technique. The process of making a pillow from shreds with your own hands

breast cancer

The Master Class dedicated to sewing sofa pillows in today's popular technique " patchwork" or " patchwork". In addition, we will talk about the patchwork stitch, which is also called quilting. Pillow Diagram it is quite simple and is made up of squares, so the lesson is also available for beginner craftswomen.

Tools and materials for sewing pillows:

  • Cotton printed fabric 4 different colors. For convenience, let's designate the colors of the fabric in Latin letters.
Fabric A: beige with a small pattern (floral ornament + hearts) 50x50 cm.
Fabric B: green with golden flowers, 30x40 cm.
Fabric C: red with snowflakes, 20x50 cm.
Fabric D: black with floral ornament, 50x50 cm.
  • In addition, we will need fabric for sewing the inside and back of the pillow. The size of the finished pillow is 50x50 cm. Therefore, we need fabric patches 60x110 cm for the inside and 60x60 for the back.
  • Patchwork - needlework, in which the seams can be laid, both manually and on sewing machine. But if you have sewing machine and know how to handle it, then stitching the flaps will not seem difficult and tedious to you.
  • Rubber mat for cutting.
  • Roller knife.
  • Ruler.
  • Thin synthetic winterizer.
  • Scissors.
  • Threads and needles for sewing by hand.
  • Iron.
  • Pins.

The patchwork diagram is shown below:

Open the patchwork part of the pillow.

The patchwork part of the pillow consists of 64 squares with a side equal to 9 cm. Of these: 16 whole squares and 48 triangles assembled from them. Whole squares will be cut later. Now let's start cutting triangles.

We need to cut out 10 squares from red fabric (fabric C), which we then cut diagonally and get 20 triangles.

Fabric A: 20 squares (40 triangles).

Fabric B: 12 squares (24 triangles).

Fabric D: 6 squares (12 triangles).

Patchwork assembly.

We lay out the cut triangles according to the diagram, we simply skip the rectangles (we have not cut them yet). We take a pair of triangles that make up one square, fold them with their faces to each other and sew diagonally.

We add the stitched squares on top of each other in the same sequence.

We iron the seam to the side of the dark fabric.

Cut off triangles.

After all the squares are sewn from triangles and ironed, you can start cutting out whole squares. To do this, measure the side of the resulting square. I got it equal to 8 cm. We cut out 16 whole squares from fabric: from fabric A - 8 squares, from fabric C - 2 squares, from fabric D - 6.

We sew a canvas from squares. One of the ways to assemble a canvas from squares is discussed in the master class: Warmer for a teapot using the Patchwork technique.

The wrong side after steaming with an iron looks like this:

The stitch of the patchwork part of the pillow.

After we have collected the patchwork, we can move on to the next step. It can be said that stitch or quilting- this is a logical continuation of the patchwork. Do not forget that padding made of padding polyester should exceed the size of the upper part with its dimensions. Lining, i.e. fabric from which lower part products, should also be 5-6 cm larger on each side than the upper part.

After the patchwork top is sewn, the seams are ironed, the lining and lining are cut out, it is necessary to fold them correctly and start stitching. We put the lining with the wrong side up, put the synthetic winterizer on it, place the patchwork top on top with the right side up.

We chip off all three components of the "sandwich" with pins.

We start quilting from the middle of the canvas. First, we quilt the central star along the contour.

Then, using soap or a piece of chalk, draw the outlines of the flower petals (see photo).

We quilt the central part along the marked lines.

On the square motifs you can quilt four-pointed stars.

Quilt a patchwork fabric using regular and decorative seams. Use in-seam stitch along the outline of the pattern. With this method, the stitches are laid directly into the seam that remained when the parts were sewn.

Sew the back of the pillow. It should be slightly larger than the top patchwork part. We also assemble the reverse side from three layers: front fabric, padding from padding polyester and lining. Quilting.

Align the back side of the pillow along the upper patchwork part.

Now let's start sewing the edging. We cut out three strips from fabric D: one of them is the longest (it can be assembled from short strips if the original piece of fabric was small) is equal to three sides of the pillow, the other two are equal to the bottom of the pillow. We will sew a zipper into the lower part, which is why we need two edging strips. It is often advised to cut the edging strips obliquely at an angle of 45 °. However, with this method, the consumption of fabric increases, a lot of scraps remain. You can cut the stripes as usual, just pre-wash and steam the fabric.

We fold the front and back parts of the pillow, put a strip on top with the wrong side up and sew along the perimeter of the pillow. First, in this way, we sew the stripes to the underside, and then around the entire perimeter.

Then we bend the strip and sew it with a hidden seam.

Patterns for beginners to create patchwork pillows

For beginners in patchwork style, such a pattern as “square in a square” is suitable. This scheme consists of isosceles triangles (shown in the photo):

The second scheme, such as the "American square", is a square located in the middle, and various rectangles surround it in a spiral with different length, but the same width:

The photo provides some ideas for pillows:

An interesting idea of using patchwork for home comfort

This article will describe a master class for making the pillow shown in the photo in the style of patchwork:

To make this particular pillow, you will need a silk fabric of two colors, blue and gray. Other colors can be selected upon request. To make hearts, you need to take red felt. Threads should be selected in the color of the fabrics. For filling, you need a synthetic winterizer. A white satin ribbon will be a great addition to decorating a pillow. And, of course, you can not do without scissors and needles.

Before you get started, you need to cut out nine strips of gray and blue fabric. They should be six centimeters wide and forty centimeters long. All strips are sewn together, after which you need to iron one side well. When stitching the stripes, the colors must be alternated.

Further, the ribbons that turned out after cutting must be sewn in a checkerboard pattern and only one side should be ironed again. A square is cut out of the finished canvas, which should be thirty-five by thirty-five centimeters in size.

To edging the pillow, it is necessary to cut out strips, the size of which will be six centimeters wide and fifty centimeters long.

To decorate the pillow, a satin ribbon is used, which is sewn diagonally and tied into a beautiful bow.

The lower part of the pillow is measured along the upper part and sewn on. When everything is ready, the product can be turned out and filled with padding polyester. The resulting hole is sewn up with a hidden seam. At the last stage, the pillow is decorated with hearts. To do this, hearts are cut out of red felt and sewn over the finished product.

DIY classic home accessory

This article presents detailed description how to sew a patchwork pillow.

The patchwork technique is perfect for making cushions for sofas. They will fit into absolutely any interior.

In order to sew a patchwork sofa cushion, you need to choose pieces of fabric that will match the tone of the furniture upholstery.

The front side will be sewn from patches, and the wrong side can be made from plain fabric. To make the front part, it is necessary to cut out squares, the side of which will be ten centimeters. Can make eight squares more bright colors and eight calm shade. Pieces of different colors are folded together with the right side and grinded. After that, the seams are well ironed. Next, you need to stitch the flaps in two pairs, but so that there is a correspondence between the stuffed flaps and the one-color ones. The result should be four stripes, which will consist of four squares. Further, all the stripes are connected into a whole canvas, while do not forget that the squares must be staggered.

To make the wrong side, you need to take a plain fabric, which will be the same size as the patchwork. Just add twenty centimeters on one side to hem the pillowcase. This hem is folded over to the wrong side and sewn on a typewriter to make a pocket.

Finally, you can grind both parts, while folding the front sides inward. You need to grind on three sides so that the part with the hem is open. Iron the seams gently. You can fill the pillowcase with padding polyester and close with a blind seam, or you can simply put it on any pillow that fits in size.

By the way, using different color schemes and combinations, with the help of squares you can create an infinite number of non-repeating patterns.

So, let's start sewing a patchwork pillow and first decide on necessary tools and materials.

We will need:

  • Cotton printed fabrics in several colors.
  • Mat for cutting parts.
  • The roller knife is the most common tool for cutting fabric in patchwork.
  • Sintepon for stuffing pillows.
  • Large round buttons (diameter 28 mm) - 6 pcs.
  • Small buttons (diameter - 6-10 mm) - 6 pieces.
  • Ruler.
  • Sewing machine.
  • Threads.
  • Needle for hand sewing.
  • Scissors.
  • By the way, if you do not have a special substrate for cutting and a roller knife, do not despair! Since the pillow is small and consists of simple elements - squares - you can also cut the details with scissors.

    Reveal the details.

First, choose the fabrics of the desired colors. It is very important that they are combined with each other. I used cotton fabrics with floral patterns.

    2. Each side of the pillow consists of 24 squares. So, in total we need to carve out 48 squares. For these fabrics, it turned out:

  • fabric with flowers - 24 pieces;
  • green background with white leaves - 6 pieces;
  • white background with green leaves - 6 pieces;
  • pink background with white polka dots - 6 pieces;
  • pink background with white leaves - 6 pieces.
  • The side length of a square is 9 cm.

    Pillow sewing.

We lay out the squares of one side on the table in the order in which they will be placed on the pillow.

    5. If everything is done correctly, then the wrong side will look very neat:

    6. Sew the squares in the same way reverse side pillows.

We cut out strips whose lengths are equal to the length of the sides of a rectangle sewn from squares, and the height is 6 cm.

    7. Sew the stripes to each side of the square. The seam allowance is 6 mm.

    8. Please note that now, due to the seams, the stripes that we sewed to the rectangle turned out to be slightly longer than the patchwork part. This will be the seam allowance.

    9. We sew the stripes along the line shown in the figure.

We do this with all four corners.

    10. Sew on the reverse side. Do not forget to leave a small hole through which we turn the product inside out and stuff it with padding polyester. After that, we sew the hole with a hidden seam.

    11. It remains only to sew on the buttons and use them to slightly pull off the pillow.

    12. We will cover large buttons (diameter 28 mm) with fabric. To do this, cut out a circle with a diameter of 65 mm from the fabric. If you have buttons of a different diameter, just keep in mind that the fabric circle should be 3-4 cm larger.

    13. We lay a basting seam along the edge of the fabric circle.

    14. Slightly tighten, put inside the padding polyester ball and the button. We tighten the hole, then flash it several times.

    15. Sew buttons on the pillow. On the reverse side, fasten with small buttons.

    TOTAL

In this masterclass you will find detailed diagrams sewing patchwork pillows with your own hands, with detailed photos.

In addition to the usual quilting tools, you will also need a ruler with 30 or 60 marks on it.

Before you start, pay attention to a few points:

BUT. Following this instruction, you will get a pillow about 50 cm wide.

    B. This will show you how to make TWO sides of the pillow., to be mirror image each other. In this workshop, they are used as the back and front of ONE pillow, but you can also make front part for TWO pillows.

But at the same time, you should NOT be lazy and try to sew only ONE side. You need to do both sides to get the right amount of correct pieces. Once you have sewn all 12 squares, you will understand! Just realize that by making only half of this sample, you will NOT get the same result as in the photo.

AT. Both sides are designed in the same way.

    G. You can make this pillow in any size you want. Just make sure you cut enough strips to end up with 12 squares.

    D. There will probably be remnants of the fabric:

    1. The ends of the strips from which the pattern will be combined can be used for other work, since the remains will be rectangular.

    2. From scraps of the main structure of the pillow, you can assemble the BONUS PART. How to do this will be shown at the end of this tutorial.

Instructions for sewing a patchwork pillow with your own hands + patterns

    Step 1:

Prepare the fabrics from which you will sew the pillow. It is best to lightly starch them before work. Later, you will need to combine different pieces diagonally to create the desired pattern, so the fabric should not stretch.

Make 3 sets of strips of the indicated sizes (cut along the width of the fabric):

    • fabric 1: 3 strips 10 cm wide;
    • fabric 2: 3 strips 6.25 cm wide;
    • fabric 3: 3 strips 10 cm wide.

    fabric strips for patchwork pillow

Lay out the fabrics from left to right: first, second, third.

    Step 2

Sew three strips together. Do this for all three sets of strips.

Smooth the seams in one direction each time, they should go in the same direction (up-up, or down-down). It doesn't matter which way you iron the seams, the main thing is that they do NOT look at each other or in different directions.

    Step 3

Measure the height of the resulting strip, it should be about 24 cm, but it can be a little less (depending on the width of the seam allowances). In any case, use the height of the strip to cut into SQUARE.

Remember to trim the edge of your strip regularly so you end up with squares. You should have enough fabric so that you can do this after each use. Sort the resulting cuts into 2 piles of 6 pieces.

    Step 4

The next step requires your special attention! Fold the squares from the first pile diagonally as shown in the next photo.

And fold the squares from the second pile diagonally like this:

    Step 5

Take the right side from the first pile and the right side from the second pile and put them together. Repeat this for the remaining flaps (those you don't work on yet, then set aside).

Align the two triangles diagonally, as shown in the photo below (the lines do not need to be drawn yet). For accuracy, use pins and a basting. Then sew the flaps and cut off the excess, the seam needs to be smoothed out.

    Step 6

Now take a ruler with 30 or 60 divisions, place it as shown in the following photos. Make sure that it recedes from the main seam to the right by 30 divisions, make a note. Then flip the ruler over and repeat for the left side.

Draw lines along the marks left. You should end up with a 60 notch wedge with a seam down the middle.

Before you cut the fabric along the lines, make sure the marks are accurate and symmetrical.

Cut off the excess, SAVE THE RESIDUE!

    Step 7

Well, now it's time to trim the ends of the seams at the top of the wedges.

Place three identical wedges on the table.

Fold two of them right sides inward. On one side, fasten them with pins, make a mark.

Make sure that the seams on the wedges exactly match each other, to do this, connect their tops with a pin.

Sew the wedges together. Stop in the middle, reaching the seams in the center.

Unfold the resulting block and smooth the seam.

Now sew the last of the three remaining wedges to the block in the same way.

    Step 8

Now follow the same steps to make three more blocks.

And finally, we collect the blocks so that a circular pattern comes out, and we cut them off with pins, sew them together.

In the end, many seam ends gather in the center. They can be stacked on top of each other and sewn on. But you can also use any other method that suits you.

Don't forget to iron the seams.

    Step 9

Well, here you have made one flower in the shape of a star. Now assemble the rest of the pieces in the same way to form the second star. See how they mirror each other?

    Step 10

Now you need to stitch the resulting details. Muslin can be used as a lining. You can stitch the stars however you want. Below are two examples ( easy way and complex).

    Step 11

Trim the protruding tips of the stars. You can use tape or any other round object for this, circling it around the edge.

Now fold both quilted pieces right side in and sew the ends (along the blue line). This option is designed for sewing one pillow. If you want to make two, use a different fabric for the back of the pillow. Sew the details around the perimeter, leaving an open section of 18-20 cm.

    Turn the pillow inside out.

    Smooth it out.

    Step 12

Start stuffing. To do this, you can use a standard bag with pillow filler. It is better to start from the top of the star.

    Sew the rest by hand.

    Step 13

If you like, you can decorate the center of the pillow with buttons. Attach the button pieces to each side of the pillow, and then firmly press them together. This will make the pillow look like a real flower.

Or you can leave everything as it is.

    READY!

The approximate size of the pillow is 50 cm, the height is about 16 cm. The red and blue pillow is larger, it uses strips of fabrics of 10 cm each. Therefore, its width was about 62 cm, respectively, and the filler consumption is also greater (about one and a half standard packages).

    BONUS PART

All the scraps that are left of the squares can be brought together and form the front part for another pillow. This is slow and painstaking work, but at the same time exciting.

    Align the pieces together.

Stack them together like pizza slices. Assemble 3 "slices" into square blocks.

Now be careful. You will have to play around with the 4 square blocks you made. They are NOT the same, only 2 pairs match.

Please note that it turned out 2 large sectors of yellow and gray colors. This frequency must be taken into account and observed if you want to make a beautiful symmetrical pillow.

As you can see, the center of this block is cut out because it is too bulky.

The resulting circle can become the front of another patchwork pillow. Its width is about 35 cm. But you can find other uses for it, for example, to make a cup holder or a rounded cosmetic bag. It depends on your imagination.
