Quilling (paper rolling) for children

From English quill - "bird feather". Even in medieval Europe, nuns created elegant medallions by twisting paper with gilded edges on the tip of a bird's quill. When viewed closely, these miniature paper masterpieces created the complete illusion that they were made of thin gold stripes. This ancient technique has survived to this day and is very popular in many countries of the world.

When autumn, with its magic brush, paints all the trees in the forest, here and there a rowan tree will peek out from behind the trunks and beckon: “Do not pass by! Come, admire, enjoy the riot of colors, because winter is coming soon! Bright, unusual tree! The autumn decoration of the mountain ash is striking in its brightness and delicacy! Clusters of mountain ash look like expensive gems - openwork orange-red leaves, and between them are small "beads" of scarlet, pink or yellow flowers.

Quilling in kindergarten

Quilling is pretty ancient art, it appeared in the 15th century.

The name itself - quilling, came from English word quilling, which in translation means a bird's feather. This art is based on twisting multi-colored strips (paper rolling) and creating quilling elements from them. Further from these elements are collected various figures both in plane and in volume.

You can use a needle, a thin awl, a toothpick, or ballpoint pen paste to twist paper strips.

Quilling "Autumn": step by step master class on the manufacture of autumn compositions using the quilling technique.

Quilling: autumn

This wonderful autumn quilling composition was sent to our contest by Darya Andreevna Lyutova and her daughter Alexandra from Moscow. Sasha is now 3 years 10 months old. They called their composition "Autumn Pond". They did the craft a year ago, when my daughter was 2 years and 10 months old, but she took a very active part.

How to make quilling on the theme Autumn: autumn pond

Tools and materials

You will need strips of colored quilling paper in different colors, glue, a quilling tool, wire, floral tape, glue, plaster, toothpicks.

Quilling Autumn: the first stage. Making a tree with leaves

We start with the most time-consuming stage - we make a tree.

Step 1. We make leaflets in the form of a "drop".

First you need to wind the leaves for the autumn tree using the quilling technique. Many "drop" elements are made.

In order for the leaflet to combine 2 colors, you need to glue half of the strip and start from the edge, the color of which should be inside.

Alexandra helped her mother wind the strips and glue their ends.

Step 2. Making the trunk and branches of the tree.

To do this, you need to cut the wire (copper cable for wiring), in the composition in the photo, a wire with a cross section of about 2 mm was used. This is the basis of the branches (and trunk) of the tree.

The length of the wire is equal to the trunk + crown.

Each wire must be wrapped along the entire length with green teip tape (floral tape). Lubricate each leaf at the place of gluing with glue (Daria and Alexandra took a second glue, but then some leaves flew around) and press firmly to the prepared branch.

My editor's note: if you need to provide a particularly strong, and at the same time transparent connection, it is better to use a glue gun. In no case should you work with second glue, Moment glue in a room where children are present, as they are toxic. Ventilate the room after work.

When a sufficient number of twigs is gathered, they need to be put all together and to the place of the crown, wrap this whole bundle tightly with teip tape to make a trunk.

After that, we bend the wire, straighten the branches, direct them in different directions, form a crown.

Quilling "Autumn": the second stage

Step 3. When the tree is ready, we do base for crafts. To do this, you need to pick up a box with a bottom of the desired area. The area of the bottom determines the dimensions of the base for the entire work. You can immediately figure out in what places you need to place a tree, and what size pond we will need.

Covering the box plastic bag. We didn't care too much about unwrapping the cellophane, because folds give an interesting texture to our base. We direct a not very liquid gypsum mortar and pour it into our mold.

We make the base of the required height, but not very thin, so that it does not break in the future.

When the gypsum begins to thicken a little to the desired state - so that something can be formed - you need to make a recess for the pond and "plant" a tree in the intended place.

We are waiting for the plaster to harden.

After that, we cover our base acrylic paint. We took green colors, because. we have early autumn. The trees are already turning yellow, and the grass is still green, though withered.

Step 4. Making water. You can also immediately tint the shore of the pond (we took brown paint, tried to imitate clay, although, in my opinion, not very well). And its bottom is blue paint.

In order to make water, we took blue beads and shades of blue and added some green beads. Everything was mixed with PVA glue and this mass was put into our pond. When the PVA dries, it will not be visible.

Alexandra believes that water from microbeads of the right shades will look very good, but it will be much more expensive.

Step 5 We make grass next to the pond. Let the paint dry, coat the entire area where the grass is planned with PVA glue and sprinkle with dried dill - this is our grass.

Step 6. We make a path to the pond. We made a path to the pond from millet. They missed the right place of the PVA base and poured grits. Here you can also take beads or microbeads.

Step 7. Making a bench. The bench is made of wire for beads - sides and back, and the seat is made of toothpicks.

How to make a bench for composition:

- a sketch of the sides and back is drawn,

- the wire is bent along it with the help of round-nose pliers.

Here are the test sides:

Toothpicks need to cut off the sharp tips, and then glue the sticks together second glue.

The daughter helped to cover the seat with golden paint.

We twist the sides and the back and fasten them together, glue the seat to them with a heat gun.

The finished bench must be glued to the base with second glue.

Step 8. We make walkways. Walkways are also made from toothpicks cut and glued together with second glue. The whole structure is glued to the base.

Step 9. Making the reeds. For reeds, you need to take teip tapes of two colors (green and brown) and a thin wire as a base.

The wire is wrapped with green tape. A brown ribbon is wound onto the top, imitating reeds.

In order to make leaves, you need to cut the green teip tape across, but not completely (we make cuts close to make the leaves thin).

We glue the leaves at the bottom of the reed blank.

We make the required number of reed stalks, collect them in a bunch and rewind them with green teip tape at the very bottom so that the bush does not fall apart. We straighten the branches, glue the bush to the water with a second glue.

Daria writes: “When we completed the composition, it seemed to us that one corner was empty, and therefore we glued pebbles there. A few leaves can be placed on the ground and water, as if they have already begun to crumble. The remaining elements of the landscape depend on your imagination! Good luck! Create with children and have fun!

In general, any picture autumn nature, especially if you have artistic skills, you can arrange it with “quilling”.

Overview of finished works in quilling style

autumn maple leaf

Beginners should try with something simple. Therefore, see step by step how to issue a listoxam. Choose the type of leaf - here it will be, as an example, maple. And draw it neatly or print a template. Be sure to draw the veins. Cut out and attach, for example, to the pillow with pins. Take a strip of red paper, it is twice as thin as the main ones. Wrap it around the pins along the lines of the veins, gluing them together: When the veins are ready, twist the “rolls” different forms. It is possible and only round, but various ones will look more interesting. Drop, rhombus, square, oval and others.

Lay out the "rolls" in any order you want. When the parts are laid out, let them dry and only then remove the pins.

Craft "Umbrella"

Autumn quilling is not limited to nature. For example, umbrellas are also associated with autumn. Instructions for making a quilling umbrella. Well, of course, you already understood that a sketch is needed for some specific pictures. And if it is difficult to draw it, then there is always the Internet with a bunch of required material. Like a leaf from the previous master class, pin the cut out umbrella and separate the sections with a strip of any color. In order to fill the zones, round parts are enough, but for the bottom you need "rolls" of the "bell" type, only more elongated.

If you want to voluminous crafts, you will have to try harder. You need toothpicks and a wooden skewer. Cut the last one, leaving the part where the sharp corner is. Put a bead on one end of each toothpick, glue the free ends to the skewer with second glue. Between the toothpicks, glue, starting from the middle, elements of "quilling", alternating them with beads.

Please note that the elements are glued in rows:

You can make an umbrella of any shape, so see for yourself where to stop. Insert elements, too, optionally such as shown in these photos:

For example, if you stop at this option, there will be not an autumn, but a summer umbrella. The finished umbrella looks like this:

paper trees

Step by step and with a description of how to make an Autumn Quilling tree, read on! Some authors recommend trying to twist the "rolls" of thick patterned napkins, they are made in the same way as regular ones, but this is a slightly different style, plus they turn out to be original colors. For autumn "quilling" - the perfect solution!

On the selected background, form the trunk and branches from twisted long pieces of napkin: Glue green, brown and gold leaves one by one between the branches.

On top of the first layer, after it dries, glue the second one, which is no longer so dense and thick.

You can place a coniferous bush nearby, for this you need to cut the fringe from a napkin and roll it all together, fluffing after the cut:

Plant grass next to the trees - that's all.

What else autumn crafts will be effective. Look at the diagram to lay out the composition yourself.

As you can see, the elements are laid out one on top of the other to create volume, and different colours emphasize the season - autumn.

Alternatively, let already fallen leaves lie under the tree:

Whole forest!
