Volumetric letters and numbers from corrugated paper

We bring to your attention detailed instructions how to make a letter or number with a textured base. The size of the finished structure will be 45 cm.

For manufacturing we need:

  • thick cardboard;
  • ruler;
  • simple pencil;
  • PVA glue;
  • scissors;
  • corrugated paper of red color;

On the cardboard we draw a template for the future design. The thickness of each element should be at least 10 cm. In the future, this will provide a solid base for our figure. To do this, you need a ruler and a simple pencil.

When the workpiece is ready, it must be cut with a 1 cm allowance on each side. This is necessary to firmly fix the seams in the process of gluing the parts together. Experienced needlewomen are advised to make a kind of notches in the place where the elements are attached. This manipulation allows you to create a solid figure that will last a long time.

Once the frame is glued, you can start decorating it. To do this, cut the corrugated paper into many identical squares.

They can be made from paper and cardboard, sewn from fabric, cut from wood, knitted or crocheted - knitting patterns can be found on the Internet. So, we read our article and do volumetric letters do it yourself.

The easiest way to make volumetric letters and numbers is to use cardboard. It is very easy to work with such material; it can be used to make a base of any size. In addition, this option is very economical, because you can use old packaging from household appliances or furniture.

Preparation of materials and tools will be required:

  1. Thick cardboard;
  2. Transparent tape;
  3. Stationery knife or scissors;
  4. Long ruler;
  5. Super glue;
  6. A simple pencil.

Now let's look at the step-by-step instructions:

  • On the cardboard we apply the front part of the sign of the required thickness and height. In order to be able to correct mistakes, we use a simple pencil.

Important! Do not use a marker to outline the mark on the base, as it can be visible through the decor.

  • We draw the second part of the facade and cut out both blanks along the contour.
  • Determine the thickness of the sign, measure out an even strip on the cardboard. To make it really flat, you need to make a few marks.
  • We lay one blank of the front part on a flat surface, apply a previously cut flat strip to it. We use adhesive tape to fix the cardboard parts from the inside.
  • On the resulting structure, we put the second blank of the facade on top and also attach it with adhesive tape.

Using this technique, you can make a volumetric base for any letter or number, be it a or me, m or b.

Important! To make the figure more dense, the inside can be filled with glued plastic cups.

Decoration of volumetric letters

There are many ways to decorate your cardboard letterhead. They involve the use of the most different materials... Moreover, the process itself will not be complicated and burdensome.

Corrugated paper

This method is one of the simplest. It will require:

  1. Crepe paper;
  2. Scissors;
  3. Glue.

We follow the instructions:

  • We unfold the corrugated paper and cut it into strips 70-100 mm wide.
  • We fold the stripes with an accordion.
  • We cut the resulting accordion on one side. The distance between the cuts should not be more than 15 mm.
  • We retreat from the edge of the workpiece the width of the crepe paper strip, glue the incised accordion with the fringe upwards on the base.
  • Thus, we glue the entire workpiece, row by row.

Important! Between corrugated paper the cardboard base should not be visible, only the fringe should be outside.

  • Gently glue the sides of the letter or number with corrugated paper.

Napkins

Paper napkins are an inexpensive and simple material with a soft base. It should be noted that for the design of volumetric figures, they will be required in large quantities.

Preparation required:

  1. Napkins;
  2. Thread;
  3. Stapler;
  4. Scissors;
  5. Glue.

We carry out the work as follows:

  • If possible, divide the napkins into layers.
  • We take several napkins, fold in half, and again.
  • Using a stapler, we fasten the resulting squares in the center.
  • Cut the square so that it turns into a circle.

Important! To obtain identical blanks, you can use a glass.

  • We lay out the round blanks on the table and use our fingers to lift all the layers of the napkin.
  • We attach the resulting volumetric blanks to the cardboard facade using glue.

Important! So that the base is not visible through the napkins, it should be pasted over with corrugated paper of the appropriate color.

Textile

To decorate in this way, you need to acquire patience. All actions must be very careful.

In addition to cardboard blanks, you should prepare:

  1. Glue;
  2. Scissors;
  3. Any fabric.

We act in the following sequence:

  • Apply glue to the front part of the workpiece. It is best to use super glue as it will not create extra volume between the cardboard and the fabric.
  • We put the fabric on top and stretch it a little with our hands. There should be no folds on the front surface.
  • We press the material and wait for the adhesive to dry.
  • Turn the letter over with the side with the already glued fabric down. Cut off excess material carefully and evenly.
  • Similarly to the first, we make out the second side of the facade of the workpiece.
  • After the glue has completely dried on large parts, glue the strips of fabric on the sides.

Important! The material needs to be fixed a little so that it can be pulled.

Usually these interior items are made in the form of the first letters or full names of newborns. They are placed in a children's room or living room.

This unusual home decoration in the form of volumetric letters-pillows is very popular with needlewomen

For those who have never tried to sew such accessories for the home, the work may seem complicated and demanding, but in fact, making pillows in the form of soft letters is very simple. A beginner can also cope with this task.

For sewing you will need:

  • fabric of the same color or contrasting shades;
  • synthetic filler;
  • threads to match the material;
  • scissors;
  • sewing machine for making straight seams and their processing;
  • pattern paper;
  • ruler 50 cm;
  • pencil;
  • safety pins;
  • chalk to transfer the pattern to the fabric.

If there is no sewing machine in the house, you can try to make pillow letters with your own hands, but this will be a very protracted process, since the size of the products is supposed to be rather big. In addition, it is better to sweep the seams to prevent shedding and divergence of the fabric during use.

DIY pillow letters: which fabric to take?

Preferences regarding the material for the craft are individual, but most often they stop at the following options:

  • cotton;
  • fleece;
  • jersey;
  • fabric for upholstery: micro-velor or flock.

The main requirement is density. The material must be durable to wear, as in the children's room the pillows will experience a lot of stress. You can use old stocks of fabric left over from sewing bedding or other items.

Preferences regarding the material for the craft are individual

It is important to choose the color. If the letters will be placed in a particular room, the prevailing tones should be taken into account. Products should be combined with wallpaper or furniture. As a basis, it is better to choose a fabric with an ornament in the form of stripes, polka dots, flowers, etc.

The sides that connect the front of the cushions can be solid colors. If the letters perform a developmental function, and elements in the form of buttons will subsequently be sewn onto them, satin ribbons, buttons and other devices for working on fine motor skills, you should choose a material without a pattern for all parts.

What sizes should I choose?

When determining the parameters of the letters, you can be guided by various considerations. The letters can be different M, L, F does not matter, the sizes and sewing patterns are the same. With a limited amount of material for the manufacture of personalized pillows, a pattern of the appropriate size should be used.

Also, a lot depends on the location of the finished products:

  • bumpers for a crib;
  • accessories for a sofa or ottoman;
  • decor for the room on which the child will sit or lie.

When determining the parameters of the letters, you can be guided by different considerations.

The classic size of soft letters is 40x35 cm. But if you wish, you can make them larger or smaller. On the Internet, you can download ready-made schemes for a height of 20 and 30 cm.

How to sew letters of the Russian alphabet: patterns

The stencil building process is straightforward. You can use a pencil and ruler, or print it out.

The last option will be the fastest and most accurate:

  1. In the Word editor, select a letter and set the necessary parameters for it. You can also download ready-made template and when printing, specify the required height. Most likely, you will have to split the stencil into several sheets.
  2. The printed pattern is cut out and the parts are glued together. You will get a full-size letter.
  3. To make it last longer, fix it with glue on cardboard or thicker paper.
  4. All ready-made stencils for one name should be put side by side and imagine how the finished pillows will look like.
  5. If you want to slightly change the shape of the letters, you can easily make corrections by highlighting unnecessary elements with a pencil and cutting them off with scissors.
  6. The sides are made in the form of strips from 5 to 8 cm wide, taking into account that about 8 mm from each edge will go to the seams.

After the patterns are ready, they begin to create a masterpiece.

We sew the letter "N"

For the classic version of the 40x35 cm pillow, you will need a piece of material of any color 1m long and 70 cm wide. You can take it with a margin so that there is enough for the sidewalls.

  1. The fabric is folded in half with the right side inward. Put a pattern on top, secure it with safety pins and circle it with tailor's chalk or a simple pencil. Adding another 1 cm along the perimeter for seam allowances, again draw a line along the contour.
  2. Cut out blanks. Stripes 5-8 cm wide are made from the remnants of fabric or other contrasting material, not forgetting to also add 1 cm along the edges. The length is determined by measuring the letter along the outer and inner boundaries with a centimeter.
  3. On a typewriter, attach the sidewall to one side of the "H". Then the second part is attached in the same way. Remember to leave a small hole to unscrew the pillowcase and fill the pillow with filler.

The slot is closed by hand with a blind seam. The soft letter "H" is ready. You can use it on your own or add the rest of the elements that make up the child's name. If sewing machine has an embroidery function, you can also put the baby's full name on the side before stitching the parts.

We sew a bagel: master class

Before you start making soft letters, you can practice on a simpler and equally popular product for children - a donut. The scheme of its creation is clear even to a child.

To sew a 40 cm round pillow with a hole in the middle you will need:

  • thick paper for building a stencil;
  • threads;
  • pencil;
  • scissors;
  • plain light material for the base 50x100 cm;
  • pink fabric for decoration 40x40 cm;
  • sewing machine;
  • safety pins;
  • multi-colored buttons of a funny shape.

The colors of the base and decor can be changed at your discretion.

Before you start making soft letters, you can practice on a simpler and equally popular product for children - a bagel.

Building a donut pattern:

  1. A sheet of paper 50x50 cm in size is folded in half twice.
  2. One end of a simple spool thread is tied to a pencil.
  3. Using a ruler, measure 20 cm from the edge of the sheet and pull the thread to this length.
  4. Further, attaching its opposite edge to the corner of the square where the fold is located, draw a smooth line with a pencil according to the principle of a compass.
  5. It turns out the fourth part of the circle.
  6. Cut off excess edges.
  7. Fold the resulting figure diagonally.
  8. Measure and cut 3 cm from the corner - this will be the hole for the donut.
  9. Unfold the paper back and the template is ready.

Preparatory stage:

  1. The fabric is folded in half with the right side inward.
  2. Above, secure the pattern with safety pins.
  3. A pencil is drawn around the shape and another circle is drawn at a distance of about 1 cm from the template. It is not necessary to do this if it is possible to cut the fabric by eye exactly, taking into account the seam allowances.
  4. The location of the hole is also indicated, but you do not need to cut it out at this stage.

Decorative element:

Edible bagels are usually filled with sweet cream. The pillow should be no exception. For this purpose, a piece of pink fabric was prepared in advance.

  1. Fold the triangle back again and make the inner hole 3 cm wider.
  2. Straighten the paper and give the edges a wavy shape, drawing by hand, cut off the excess.
  3. Put the scheme on the wrong side of the material for the "cream", circle and cut out everything, including the hole in the middle, without allowances for the seams.

Connection of parts:

  1. A piece of pink material is attached to the front side of one half of the base, aligning in the middle.
  2. Fasten the fabric with pins and attach the "cream" on a typewriter using a zigzag.
  3. Fold both sides of the base face inward and sew the edges, leaving a hole of about 15 cm.
  4. The place where the donut hole will be is also stitched along the drawn contour. Then cuts are made crosswise and carefully cut out excess material, stepping back about 1 cm from the machine line. So that the fabric subsequently lies flat, neat notches with a length of no more than 6 mm are made with the tips of the scissors at a short distance from each other.
  5. The pillowcase is turned inside out and stuffed with padding polyester or other available filler to the desired degree of elasticity.
  6. Using a blind stitch, sew up the remaining hole by hand.

The resulting cute donut lacks sprinkling. It is made by attaching multicolored buttons on a pink background in random order. This pillow will become the favorite item for the child and his little guests.
