The violin is a wonderful musical instrument that has won millions of hearts thanks to its lyrical sound. However, violinists (both beginners and professionals) are well aware that the violin not only has a delicate and fragile sound. It is also in itself a rather whimsical tool that requires a special approach and care.

First of all, it is worth protecting the violin from hitting straight lines. sun rays to avoid drying out. Under no circumstances should this musical instrument be left under the scorching sun. The same applies to severe frosts: the violin generally does not like significant temperature changes, so you need to try to maintain a favorable temperature regime in the place where the instrument is stored. Remember not to leave the violin near open heat sources: fireplaces, heaters, stoves, etc.

Second, not less important advice: The violinist must constantly monitor the humidity level in the environment where the violin is stored. This musical instrument does not like excessive moisture, because it makes the wood damp, perhaps even the appearance of mold, or too dry air, because in the latter case, cracks and other damage can appear on the wood - and the instrument will become completely unusable. Experts recommend maintaining the optimum humidity level in the room at 45-60 percent.

It is also a vital duty of the violinist to regularly clean the instrument, which should preferably be cleaned and wiped down after each use. Do not neglect this duty in order to avoid the appearance of dirt, abrasions and other unpleasant traces of use on the violin body. To avoid this, we suggest using online stores, for example,

However, even if he fully complies with all the basic recommendations for the care of the violin, its owner is not insured against damage to the instrument. As a result of natural wear and tear (if the violin was used for a sufficiently long period of time), and as a result of some unforeseen accidents (impacts, falls, other mechanical damage).

If such troubles occur, you need not hesitate, but turn to a qualified violin maker, who can offer an extensive range of instrument repair services - from changing strings to restoring the varnish.

Contrast is always attractive, agree! It is on it that the most ancient embroidery, called blackwork today, is based. Patterns reminiscent of old lace beckon to plunge headlong into the past and reproduce mysterious designs. What is the secret of embroidery so attractive for many modern needlewomen? We will tell you in our article.

Blackwork embroidery. The work of Yulia Kopylova

Blackwork embroidery (from the English black-on-white embroidery) - embroidery of a black lace pattern on a white background. The word “blackwork” itself also comes from English - blackwork, which literally translates as “black work”. Many people refer to blackwork embroidery as simply black embroidery. So, let's figure out what it is. But ... it would be interesting for a start to learn about the history of this unusual embroidery, right? And its history has very deep roots.

Blackwork yesterday and today

It is believed that the birthplace of blackwork is the East. From there this embroidery came to Spain and further to other European countries. In the 16th century, blackwork embroidery gained popularity in England. She was brought here from Spain by the first wife of King Henry VIII of England, Catherine of Aragon (daughter of the founders of the Spanish state, Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabella of Castile). With her passion for blackwork embroidery, the queen managed to infect hundreds of court ladies. By the way, until the 1530s, blackwork was called Spanish work and was renamed black embroidery as a result of the divorce of Catherine and Henry, when everything Spanish in England fell into disgrace.

During its heyday, black embroidery adorned women's and men's shirts, as well as household items. Initially, it was done exclusively with black silk threads, then threads of other colors were used. The embroidery done with red threads is called Scarletwork, and the embroidery done with green threads is called Greenwork. Aristocrats, in order to give their outfit a more luxurious look, added gold-colored threads to the black embroidery.

Blackwork became widespread among the poor classes in England. This embroidery replaced the lace on the cuffs and collars. The fact is that the production of lace in those days was subject to a high tax, so many could not afford it.

In the 17th century, black embroidery loses its popularity. This was facilitated by the development of the textile industry and the spread of colored dyes.

The emergence of interest in blackwork began to be observed again only in the last century. Now we can talk about some kind of revival of ancient technology. Many blackwork embroidery patterns have been created, kits are produced, books on this type of needlework are printed. For example, you can learn about black embroidery from the book by Sally Sanders “Royal English school of embroidery ”.

Today, pillows, needle cushions, decorative pendants, paintings, various accessories, such as phone cases, cosmetic bags, belts, are embroidered using the blackwork technique. Embroidery with blackwork elements can be found in the design of notebooks, bookmarks for books, caskets ... and even on clothes.

To this day, blackwork is performed mainly with black threads on a white or cream canvas. However, color patterns in this technique are also often found (moreover, very different ones).

Embroidery features

Let's dwell directly on the features of blackwork embroidery.

Blackwork patterns are usually geometric in shape and are suitable for filling in both large and small areas of embroidery.

Blackwork refers to countable types of embroidery. The technique is based on the so-called holbein seam. The seam got its unusual name from the name of the German artist Hans Holbein. "What does this person have to do with embroidery?" - you ask. Let us explain. Hans Holbein did not embroider, and a specific shovchik was named in his honor because the painter often depicted in his paintings representatives of the upper classes of Britain in clothes with black embroidery.

Now let's figure out how the holbein seam is made. In fact, it is very simple to make and looks like a backstitch (backstitch) stitch often found in cross stitching. When making a holbein seam, first a row of stitches is laid “forward to the needle”, and then the gaps in the resulting seam are filled with the same stitches, moving in the opposite direction.

From the front and back side, such a seam looks the same. Note that at one time this was very important, since mostly collars and cuffs of clothes were embroidered (which we mentioned at the beginning of the article).

In modern designs of black embroidery, such stitches as cross, half-cross, “back to the needle” are often used.

Embroidery "Chess". The work of Yulia Kopylova

- Yulia, how did you get involved in blackwork embroidery?

- I saw the scheme with checkerboard embroidery. I immediately realized that it would be possible to arrange the work in a box. I ordered the figures through the online store and a box in the baguette workshop - and a gift for my husband is ready for his birthday! I knew that he dreamed of chess.

- What materials did you use for your work? What is more suitable for blackwork embroidery?

- For the basis, it is better to chooseuniform weave fabric... Canvas is also suitable, but still the work will look more beautiful on the uniform. I was embroidering on white Linde 27 count and black floss DMC 310. What thread to embroider in blackwork, it seems to me, is not important. For my other cross-stitched works, I used DMC , that's why I decided to embroider chess with them. It's the same with the needle - I used the usual

The master class was given by Zoya Patching.

Blackwork is translated from English as "black work". Despite the strange name, the result looks truly mesmerizing.

Blackwork is an amazing embroidery technique that uses geometric fill patterns to shape a design. Below I will tell you the basics of this technique. In addition, I will show you how to create designs in different shades using only one color of thread. Trust me: one color can be a huge potential!

Materials.
Blackwork is best done on Evemveave or on linen. These fabrics produce better details, and this is very important for fill-stitch patterns. It is better to use a thinner needle than usual. For example, for Evemveave fabric # 28, I choose tapestry needle # 26 (not 28 as for cross stitches): the blunt tip, without clinging to the threads, smoothly goes through the holes in the fabric. Use an embroidery frame or hoop to keep the fabric tension evenly. To attach the canvas to the frame, sew strips of cotton fabric to the edges of the canvas.

Patterns for filling.

This design uses four types of fill stitches that are sewn through different numbers of threads on the fabric. In order not to get confused, it is better to sew the stitches in the same sequence. And remember: under no circumstances should the thread be pulled through those areas on the fabric that are free from embroidery.

Leaves.

This is the name of the rounded fill pattern. It is created by elements in the form of leaves and executed in one ooze, two of ours.

Outer petals.

This pattern is used to create a shadow effect. The outer petals are embroidered in one or two niches, and sometimes - in the lightest areas - the stitches can be skipped altogether.

Inner petals.

This smaller fill pattern is ideal for small areas of inner flower petals. In the lightest areas, stitches are skipped, and the number of threads is also varied - one or two.

Inner petals with transition.

A simple zigzag pattern is used in narrow areas. It is performed horizontally or vertically in two separate areas in order to clearly highlight the sections: the light and shadow of the flower petals.

4

5

Shades.

In large blackwork designs, you can use up to six strands of floss to fill in the darkest areas of the design, gradually reducing the number to one strand in the lighter areas. Another way to make some areas lighter is to leave some areas without embroidery at all. The trick is that an accidental break in the fill pattern creates a smoother transition. This is exactly what was done in the photo: the transition from embroidery in two strands to breaks in the pattern is shown.

Operating procedure.
To keep the lines and patterns crisp and clean, it is best to first embroider the background areas, such as leaves, and then the outer petals. When these details have been completed, the transitions and inner petals can be sewn. At the very end, outlines are made with backstitches. For outlines, use a single floss and a sharp embroidery needle to make the finished design look like a professional piece.

Making pads for pins.

1. Mark the final size of the pillow with a basting stitch on the embroidery. Cut out a piece of the same size from the fabric for the back, remembering to leave a seam allowance of at least 1 cm on all sides.

2. If you want to sew zigzag tape, place each piece of tape in the center of the basting line on face design. Baste the braid.

3. Place the fabric for the back often over the top of the embroidery and machine stitch them, leaving a hole along one side.

4. Finally, turn the pillow over and insert the filler into it, then sew the hole.

- Use thread lengths of about 30 cm so that the threads do not unravel and break.

In areas where there is no embroidery, threads that stretch along the wrong side are very noticeable. To fasten, weave the thread between the stitches in the previously embroidered areas, try to make the wrong side look as neat as possible.

The most elegant way to secure the thread is to make a simple knot and sew a couple of tiny stitches in an area of the fabric where they won't be visible. Pull the thread to make sure it is secure, and cut the knot.

Cover the fabric to avoid staining it. tissue paper leaving only the area where you will be embroidering free.

Always have a scotch tape with you - it can be used to easily and effectively remove black fluff from fabrics.

Try not to pull the "tails" of the thread on the wrong side where there will be no embroidery on the front side.

The work will be easier if you concentrate on sewing one section at a time. This will help you control the progress of the work, especially in areas where the transition from one strand to two strands occurs.

If you want to use your own patterns for filling, remember that an open fill pattern appears lighter than a small pattern that looks more saturated.

Looking through handmade sites in search of something new, I came across a very interesting technique embroidery - blackwork. The work in this technique is so unusual that I wanted to know more about it.

It turns out that the history of blackwork goes back to the distant past. The homeland of this technique is the Middle East, and blackwork owes its flourishing to Catherine of Aragon, who brought embroidery from Spain to England in 1501. Initially, blackwork meant embroidery with black silk threads on white linen. Then the needlewomen began to embroider with red (scarletwork), green (greenwork) and other threads. Nowadays, all these types of embroidery are called blackwork.

Embroidery in this technique was used to decorate individual items of clothing, as well as bed linen and household items. For greater luxury, aristocrats used gold-colored threads for blackwork.

For the poor, blackwork in classic black replaced lace, which was taxed at the time.

After the development of the textile industry and the spread of colored dyes, "black embroidery" disappeared into oblivion as boring and unattractive. But now there is a revival of this embroidery technique. Many schemes have been developed, many books have been written devoted to this unusual type of needlework. More and more often, embroiderers use threads of different colors in one work. This type of needlework continues to develop and change, occupying the minds and hearts of many needlewomen around the world.

The stitches used in the blackwork technique are called "holbein", after the artist Hans Holbein, who in his paintings depicted "black embroidery" on the clothes of British aristocrats. This stitch is very similar to the forward stitch, but there are differences. The main thing is that it looks the same both from the front and the wrong side of the product.

Separate motifs and sharp corners are sewn with a needle back seam. Also in this technique, a stalk stitch and a Bulgarian cross are used.

Any fabric is suitable for blackwork embroidery. Most of the work is done on an ordinary canvas, but for greater expressiveness it is better to use fabrics of a uniform weave.

This technique attracted me with its sophistication and airiness. I hope it will attract you too.

Blackwork masters advise starting with small works, like these:

The black embroidery technique is a type of back stitch. It is performed with simple stitches, which are applied in rows on the fabric in the form of a counting pattern with a symmetrical composition, kept inside the contour. The use of two-strand and one-strand stitches creates scenic shadows, and the areas not filled with embroidery create the effect of light reflected on surfaces.
Black embroidery, also called "blackwork", has been known in Europe since the 15th century: in particular, it was used to decorate linens for bed linen and decorate clothing details. In the very simple version black embroidery is carried out based on the use of symmetrical patterns from which the design is created. At the same time, they work with black thread on white fabric, which gives the pattern the effect of lace. Typically, a double needle-forward stitch, also known as a holbein stitch, was used to create patterns - it is the same on the front and back sides. For this reason, it has become very popular for embellishing garments such as cuffs and collars.

And some more text:
To create blackwork embroidery, use black thread. The work is performed with a special seam, similar to a "back needle" - holbein.

Holbein is a much simpler stitch than cross stitch or satin stitch. And it has an important advantage over popular techniques - it looks the same from the front side and from the wrong side. Most likely, this was the main reason for its spread to the clothes of medieval nobles. First, the perimeter of the pattern is sewn with stitches "forward to the needle", and then come back, filling in the gaps between the stitches. And - voila, the seam is ready! The background color, by the way, can be anything. For example, embroidery looks great on a yellow background. But the threads should only be black - otherwise it is not blackwork.

With the help of holbein, you can embroider patterns that closely resemble lace. During the time of James I in England, the production of lace was subject to very high taxes, and the enterprising British used this technique to imitate lace on cuffs and collars. The artist Hans Holbein in his paintings captured the representatives of the upper classes of Britain in clothes with patterns of black threads - and the seam gets its name from the name of a man who never did embroidery.

There are special embroidery patterns using the blackwork technique. These schemes can be divided into two main groups: contour and tint. By embroidering according to the contour scheme, you designate with a seam only the outlines of objects. Most often, such works look simple if an unusual plot is not selected or the embroidery is not lace. Patterns that can be used to embroider whole pictures, where the density of the embroidery determines the saturation of the color (from black to light gray), are more time consuming. However, the result looks quite impressive. Picturesque shadows, highlights, the illusion of volume - all this can be conveyed on embroideries made by the seemingly uncomplicated blackwork technique.
